Hooked the crud out of my driver on the range pre-round. First tee has a big transmission power line tower blocking the right side of the fairway; if you hit it, you have to replay the shot. Sure enough, I hit a push hook, and the ball comes back toward the tee, lands on the tee box, and rolls to about five feet away from me. Didn't even have to get a ball out of my pocket, just picked it up and re-teed. (Next one was a lower hook, but not as far to the right, skipped off the cart path, ended up in the fairway for about a 200-yard drive. LOL.) Hit a 6-iron solid but pushed it and couldn't get it to draw back enough and missed just right of the green; chipped to four feet and sank the putt for par.
And that pretty much set the tone for the day. Terrible with the driver, solid with the mid-long irons, bad with short irons, good chipping & putting. I think I had five chips/pitches inside of 4 feet. Missed two four-footers, but other than that and one 3-putt I rolled it well. Sank a 28-footer and a 13-footer and barely missed two from 12-13 feet.
Best shot of the day was probably a 8-iron from the rough with a slight uphill/ball above my feet lie, 150ish out, over some trees. Ended up pin-high and gave me a 13-footer for birdie. Just missed it on the low side.
I'm pleased with the score but it's still frustrating that I'm driving it so poorly. I even tried taking it easy, but that just led to 150-yard snap hooks instead of 200-yard snap hooks. On the plus side, I was hitting them on the ground so much that some of them didn't have time to roll out of the fairway. Also, I had a ton of bad shots when I had wedges into greens. Really annoying to have a gap wedge in my hands and miss it 20 yards right or short or long or left (and yes, I think I missed gap wedges in all of those directions today).
But looking at my score, I guess this proves that you can hit it awful as long as you have short-game rungood...I mean skill.
