IIRC Tom Watson was more of a 'sweeper' and didn't take much of a divot and he turned out just fine. this memory may very well be skewed by images of Open Championships played off of tight lies.

I don't get to play in many charity scrambles since they're often scheduled on Mondays and that's not very compatible with work obligations, but usually get out for two or three a year.

Seems like about 80% have been canceled for this season so far but I finally get to play one later next week. It's a dumb, bastardized form of golf (especially when they crank up the hole-by-hole fundraising) but I still enjoy it on occasion.

Are any happening where you guys are?

I played in one last week, everything was held outside. Food was served buffet style by staff with masks. We did double up on carts.

In the DFW area, a lot of the spring events were postponed until summer or fall. So those are starting to take place.

We shot -17, lost by 3 lol. You gotta cheat hard to win any scramble in my experience.

Truth. I don't bother with events that have meaningful prizes for the "winners" -- sure, a dozen balls or a shirt or something is cool, no chance I'm playing for cash -- and the best scrambles are the ones where most of the prizes are given by random draw.

About ten years ago I played in a scramble where it was a new charity with a lot of seriously motivated people. The committee collected over a hundred donated prizes, it took a couple hours to give them all away after the golf. The guy we recruited last minute as a fill in to play for free walked away with three raffle prizes, including a soundbar. I collected ... nothing. It was quite amusing.

Another year that same charity let groups buy mulligans, except they didn't limit the number you could buy. Oops. One group bought a ton, mulliganized anything and everything, and took 6 1/2 hours to finish their round. They won, but I don't think many people stuck around to witness it.

over the past few years i've played in 8 or so scramble/shambles over the course of each summer. pretty much all of them have the primary focus of being marketing/business development opportunities related to my particular field (development/design/construction). everyone who plays is either having their company pay their entry or are guests of other folks who are paying. all of the ones early in the summer have been cancelled but it appears some organizations are still planning on having their tourneys in Aug/Sept. we shall see.

I don't remember if I told this story here before, but when I lived in Florida my there was a local rugby team who had scramble tournaments twice a year. My dad and I had a team of ringers and we won almost all of them in the 90's. They used to give away tons of Chick Fil A sandwiches, which were the coveted prizes. Our reign came to an end in the early 2000's when a kid named Billy Horshel and his dad started winning them all.

several years ago i played in a scramble hosted by a local private college as one of their biggest athletic department fundraisers. it just so happened i was in a foursome sponsored by a local general contractor, and it also just so happened they had the reigning state am champion as an intern at the time. we played in the mandated scramble format but also let him play his own ball the entire round. i think he shot a 62 or 63 on his own and we won by a stroke or two. at the banquet later that evening he was awarded all four KP prizes, the long drive, and to top it all off won two random raffles for a wide screen plasma TV and a club fitting at a local outfit. needless to say the crowd was not happy by the end of the night.

Got appointment for iron fitting because my mizuno mp 30 p-2 set(currently without 8 iron I’m dumb) because only the 5 and 6 irons are somewhat close to having a correct lie angle for me. Maybe it’s because of my chimpanzees arms (sorry no pics). Currently I have to grip the pw, 9, (previously 8), 7, 4, 3, 2 at uncomfortably low heights. Basically If I take a comfortable grip the toe of the club is elevated. I’ve been compensating by moving the ball back in my stance to get the right lie angle, and assuming that I’m going to pull it or hook it or both lol.

Since this is my first fitting, I have some ideas that are going through my head.

a) because left to right side slope lies happen, I think my stock good lie swing should be fitted for the ideal ball position, with the condition that I don’t grip the club at the very end during the fitting.

B) My deceased titleist 3 wood had a hard Thin cork like grip, that allowed Me to get within an inch of the butt of the club comfortably. I think maybe if I get my irons gripped with something similar it might be good or bad idklolwtf. Is softer better for higher loft? Thinking in physics terms, I would think that less cushion = more stability and potential acceleration properties.

Any experience and wisdom here is appreciated.

Really want to go do a driver fitting in the near future to mess around with shaft length. Figured they could do it better than me in adding weight to the head.

Holiday weekend golf plans? I've got rounds lined up tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. Also planning to watch the PGA before I cancel YoutubeTV on Monday.

One of the guys I play with started his holiday weekend with a twilight 18, then has times tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. He's also playing first thing Monday. Three in a row is enough for me, I think.

Are you cancelling YouTube because the prices are going up? I just got notified that they want to start charging me $65 instead of $45.

Yep. I should have canceled months ago since without sports I watch way less. I'm pessimistic about football season happening, may as well save the coin. Also, **** google for jacking it up.

I'm playing Saturday & Sunday mornings. Skipping the BBQs this year and just golfing. Sunday it's at my "home" track just over a mile up the road and is nothing special. Saturday though, playing this place for the first time. I'm looking forward to that. And yes, watching a lot of PGA this weekend as well.

was gonna put this in bbv thread, but im not sure what i shot. i hit a lot of 9 irons today because i dont have an 8 iron. was consistently getting it on the front of the green or the fringe with shots between 125 and 150 to the center. the wind made it play a bit tougher than usual. got to play the back for free. 18 holes for 25 bucks day before the 4th is a hard deal to beat around here.

i got into a long argument with some tall grass on par 5 second hole for a 13. its probably the only playable patch of long grass on the course.

few decent 5/6/7 irons when necessary. few punches out of trouble that made it through the trees and found the fairway. only one put > 10 feet fell for me, but i made the short ones.

since i dont have a driver nor a 3 wood, the 5 wood is the longest club I carry. i hit it off the tee on 1, 2, 3, 5, 9 always, and sometimes the par 3 sixth hole depending on tees. so thats 10 shots guaranteed with one club. i should probably put in some practice with it. fade goes about 185 maybe. draw goes about 200. its an old wilson nothing special, but it is my longest club at the moment.

seeking help.....

i took a lesson yesterday. she asked what i shoot when i'm good. i said it's been a while but high 80's. and when i'm bad? i told her i can get up to 110.

she saw me chip (i can't chip) and said she had to perform emergency surgery. she had me use my wrists which i found odd but after a few i was hitting some decent.

then i swung some full clubs. i have way too much speed (which i know). she tells me to slow down. i try and i tell her it just feels so strange. she says "ok, don't slowdown and keep sucking." i had to laugh.

so two questions....
1) thoughts about using wrists when chipping?
2) how does one slow down their swing?

edit: she said i should easily to be able to get to an average of 85. maybe she's being nice. who knows.

Trying to come up with a game plan for the FSGA Mid-Senior (now 40 and Over) Championship. My thought process is the center of the green on each hole. No attacking any pins.

Ideally would like to make par on every hole. There are a total of 4 par 4's playing over 400 yards. Thought process will be no worse than bogey on those 4 holes. If I can roll in a single birdie that leaves me with a 75. I'd be happy with that and will give me a good shot at making the cut heading into round 2.

One other thought process is to chip everything within 8 feet of the hole on greens that I miss (hopefully better) so I have a reasonable chance at making par.

Also, no others.

Why is it that golfers try to play differently in tournaments than usual?

How about do what works for the INDIVIDUAL.

I didn't know there was one good way to play tournaments.

1) if you dont break your wrists on the backswing, you will have way too much loft coming through impact; you will never get into the correct wrist position before impact. I believe in holding off the follow through on chipping, and that you should be able to hit chip after chip without having to readjust your wrist at address, but this doesnt mean that there is zero wrist movement. the wrist movement happens on the backswing. i suggest watching seve ballasteros, gary player, and lee trevino videos on youtube because they can explain chipping much better than i could in a little box.

2) starts with the backswing of course. i like the one two three one two three drill. start counting when you start your backswing. two is when the club is about parallel with the ground. three is the top of your backswing. one initiates the downswing. two is the moment of impact, and three is the follow through. the effect is that the club is accelerated slowly and consistently, increasing speed until both arms are fully extended after impact.

maybe you don't have issue with tentative swings. I do. I also hit much better shots when I have an exact target where I want the ball to first land. unless there is some ridiculous drop off beyond the hole or if the green is extremely sloped, I do best when my chips and pitches meet these qualifications:

a) have exact landing spot picked out.

b) have exact finishing spot picked out(usually the pin)

i think (a) doesn't need explanation as most decent golfers already do this.

if there are no ridiculous nor extreme conditions that force me to miss the pin in a specific spot, then I always try to hole my chips and pitches. for distance control it depends on the slope that im working with. if its a downhill chip or pitch, I pick out a specific landing spot and a conservative finishing spot(almost always above the hole) and then i make an aggressive stroke at those points. if its an uphill chip or pitch, i again pick an exact landing spot, but I pick out a finishing spot that is much closer to the hole(or even beyond the hole on extremely uphill chips and pitches), and again I make an aggressive stroke at those points.

I also reached out to a local private club who would just send it over to another less local private club.

1. What's a good shaft for a 7 HDCP who swings hard at it? I'd need it to be stiff.
2. About what should the total reshaft cost? If a good shaft is $80 retail, what should the cost with labor come out to?
3. At what point does it become not worth the reshaft?
Go to golf works and buy the adapter and shaft. Super easy to do. Define swing hard? Older good shafts might be $80, but new good ones are way more unless by good you mean stock non upgrade shafts. It becomes not worth it when it costs you more then something like an older epic costs on Callaway preowned. The R15 is a huge upgrade over the burner.

Honestly putting a driver shaft and adapter together is really really easy. Now pulling the adapter from a shaft you should not do without a shaft puller. Twist as pulling and you **** the graphite shaft.

You should never reuse an adapter that’s been pulled from a shaft.
