A few years ago I would say putters hardly matter and is almost all mental, but I tried the iPing putter app-thingy and bought one of the putters that recommended for me (mainly because I wanted a Ping Anser anyway).

It's been great and I've not even considered changing putters after getting it and that's like 4-5 years ago.

Just yesterday, I stuck a 9-ron to within 18 inches and then batted the putt two feet past....and then missed the par putt coming back.

I think I need a routine of some sort, beyond what I do now. I'm trying all sorts of things. So if a new putter might help, I'm all for it!
A new putter might work in the short run, but practice is what helps you in the end. Have you tried intermediate targets? Helped me a lot.

Another weekend ahead and another torrnament. My club's member / member. 18 Friday "practice round" with money involved. 18 Saturday with 9 shamble and 9 alternate shot. 18 Sunday best ball.

Also signed up for Titleist Thursday's at the local TPC. Gonna figure out a shaft combination for some AP2's.

indeed. me too.

i fall back a lot on pool-feel when i putt. i've only recently abandoned my hands-dominant putting stroke, due entirely to the 'practice routine'. last season i switched to a ping blade after a couple decades using a mallet. i think the blade gives me lots more options to cut, draw, punch, over-spin, etc.

i've been developing a stroke that focuses on the right elbow. i pull the putter back with the right elbow bent, and right wrist cocked, then glide the elbow through the ball, keeping my hands neutral, club hanging, loose wrists. i'm finding the ball leaves on the line i intend, and i can control speed with my elbow...kind of like when i need to make a delicate stroke with a cue. but not entirely, of course, because my elbow doesn't move when i hit a cue ball. the feel is similar.

You should try an oversized grip on the putter if you haven't.

Are you saying you try to put different spin on the putts?

So I spent an hour or so at the store, trying out putters, and I settled on this:

A Taylormade OS CB Monte Carlo.

I tried the Daytona blade and the over-sized Spider mallet, and I liked them both...but I split the difference with this putter. I liked how it was balanced and how smooth and a little heavy it feels. I also really like the over-sized grip.

I also tried some Ping and Odyssey putters, but liked this one the best. Playing tomorrow, so we will see how it does!

It's very likely your setup is just bad. Your alignment is probably off, your eyes aren't anywhere near "over the ball". Maybe you have body movement? Maybe you involve too much wrist? There's a million reasons outside of the putter as to why you're having trouble.

You may prefer a mallet type putter that is face balanced as opposed to a blade type putter that is heel-toe balanced. You also may need a putter that is shorter. I'd say at least 80% of golfers play with putters that are too long. That's my opinion of course, but I don't think anyone will argue against.

Yeah to echo others the grip matters probably more than the putter head. If you are missing 18 inch putts it is mental pure and simple. You need to make your practice time have more simulated pressure. Or just gamble bigger and either it will work out or you will lose a lot
Btw I am a head case putting and I play for a lot of $ so this isn't holier than thou but I can relate somewhat.

My eyes are over the ball. I make sure of it. One thing about the new putter - my old one did not compare to how it rolled the ball. It was light and shook a lot on the back swing....the new one is smooth as butter.

Obviously, a new putter will not cure my putting woes - only practice can do that. But it can certainly help a little, right? And maybe the psychological effect of having a new, shiny toy will give me more confidence.

I know I just said all that stuff about the club not mattering if your mechanics are awful, but with that said, I agree that a mallet can make a big difference from a blade putter if you've never used one before. I am one of the best putters I know and I can't putt for **** with a blade putter even if I think they look cooler. I just can't tell where they're aiming and they feel weird to me when I make a stroke.

Went to a "Titleist Thursdays" fitting at the local TPC today. I wanted to be fit for some AP2's. I basically knew what I wanted I just needed to figure out what shaft to get. I tried:

Project X 6.0
Dynamic Gold X100
KBS C-Taper (???)

The DG X100 was by far the best shaft for be. I hit the ball fairly good and towards the end of the fitting hit hit my usual miss, a high short shot. He pulled out a board to hit off of to see where I was making contact with the bottom of the club. He adjusts the club to 2* upright and boom, flush contact.

Never knew I needed to be upright. Good lesson there, all for free.

New putter did well today, although i'm still getting used to it...

So I was practicing with my new putter today and tried this out:

When I putt anything over 10 feet, I'm gripping the putter normally, with my elbows bent...I still do better lagging when I slightly slap at it instead of putt through completely.

Because my new putter is longer than my older one, and it has a thick grip, I fins myself choking up on the putter when I'm hitting shorter putts - with my arms completely straight...when I putt, I do a pendulum motion that's all one piece - no bent elbows or wrists or anything...anyone else do something similar? It seems to work.

yes i choke down (on all putts), but i have an odyssey tank cruiser 330 mallet counterbalanced putter with 38" shaft and superstroke grip, and i choke that thing down to almost the bottom of the grip because it's counterbalanced. two changeable weights in the head and one in the butt end of the shaft.
http://www.odysseygolf.com/clearance...uiser-330.html

previous putter was an old 35" odyssey white hot mallet, and there's no doubt my strokes are smoother and more consistent with the current setup.

Dominic: obv there is no "right" way to putt but I think the arms straight pendulum motion is definitely good. Most people have putters that are way too long. I use a 50/50 grip and grip my putter at the very bottom of its super stroke wide grip. This bends me over more and gets my eye over the ball. Pretty happy with it

So somebody carded a 13 on a hole in our tournament today. It was during the alternate shot format. The hole is below.

1st - fairway
2nd - good, about 170 out.
3rd - water
4th - drop
5th - water
6th - drop
7th - water
8th - drop
9th - bunker right of hole
10th - bunker shot left in bunker
11th - on the green
12th - missed putt
13th - holed out

So still 3 strokes better on a par 5 than Kevin Na on a par 4?

And when you think about it what happens if they don't get off the tee good or hit a fairway bunker.

So I bought a used sand wedge the other day and didn't realize until today that the shaft is graphite. The rest of my irons are steel. Anything special I should expect with regard to performance or feel?

It's just lighter...maybe whippier if it's a flex or normal shaft

Depends if it a fairly modern graphite shaft or the ones they put in irons 15 years ago. It will be lighter but beyond that it could play many different ways.

If it is the recoil or aerotech then they are really good shafts assuming the flex is correct. If is isn't stiff enough you can always pull it and cut a little of the tip.
