Fair enough. I'm no expert, but anything above 85-90 mph you're going to want stiff most of the time. I swing probably 98-105 mph and use stiff.

If you go to a Demo Day they'll get you all fixed up.

Now that the weather is turning to golf weather I'm in the market for a laser range finder. I've generally heard that Bushnell is the best, though I'm not sure why. Once I decided that I wanted laser instead of GPS and I wanted one without slope I narrowed it down to these:
Tour V2
Pro 1600 Tournament Edition

What is the difference between these two? Is the Pro 1600 supposed to be the newer/better one? I've never used either and the website's description don't really mention any difference except that the Tour V2 has a more ergonomic shape.

cracked the face of my r7 tp driver so purchased a used nike 5000 8.5 degree from global golf (needed something cheap and fast...and i've hit it before so should be okay...i hope.)

anyone else have experiences with global golf?

I may also be looking to upgrade my irons. A few years old now I currently have the TaylorMade R7 Draw irons in left hand. I'm looking for something in the direction of a muscle back. My handicap is 10.5 and here are my yardages by club. I'm thinking about getting the MP-52's or Titleist CB. Any recommendations or feedback on those two I mentioned?

The dymo and the sasquatch have the same COR and should theoretically go the same distance with similar launch conditions.
lol I had this going on. I was pretty erratic with my r7 and I hit my wife's callaway ft-5 and just drilled it straight every single time. Problem is I hit it really high and put a lot of spin on it, and it was 10.5 degree. So basically, I hit the ball like 250 max. Solution: got a hardly callaway ft-9 tour with a $400 mitsubishi shaft in it for $350.

Swing gurus:

I have a swing question. I am pretty damn good with 7 iron - lob wedge....like near scratch golfer ish probably. However, I am bad with 5 irons and such, and basically can't hit a three wood to save my life right now. (although my driver is A-OK).

I hit a draw and my swing is probably too flat. Can someone explain why in the hell hitting a 3 wood or a hybrid is impossible?

I've had the V2 for almost a year it does everything I want it to, I'm happy with it.

I don't think this is worthy of its own thread, so here it goes.

I'm a bad golfer. Index in the mid 20's (but, considering that 9 months ago, i was over 36.4, I guess you could say I'm improving). My biggest struggles now are with my driver (specifically, hitting it OB).

Thing is, I'm fairly long with my clubs. I'm 6'6" or 6'7", and quasi-athletic, so I have a huge swing arc. I can hit (rarely do, but can, especially off a tee) a 9 iron 145-150. But, I can't hit my driver longer than my 5w (215ish).

My problem is that I have a killer slice with my driver. I'm almost certain (and, for the purpose of this post, let's assume I'm certain) that my problem is that I have too tight of a grip with my right hand (I'm right handed) on my downswing, not allowing the club face to close. So, the ball slices off to the right. I can help negate this by taking a ton of speed/power off with my driver (hence the 210 yard drives).

I think the problem is that my driver (Nike SQ 5900) head is so light, that I don't 'feel' it enough to allow my hands to close.

Without me posting a video (which I may do in a month or so), anybody have any thoughts/tips?

Thanks,

Josh

Your grips are probably too thin (and maybe old and worn).
Get new, thicker grips that will make you more likely to lighten up your grip.

You are probably right about gripping it too tight with the right hand, but there is more to your wicked slice than just that.

Make a bunch of practice swings (and often) with your pinky and ring finger of both hands off the club.
Get comfortable swinging with this grip- and creating a good swoosh with the club.
By doing this, you will instinctively learn to create good clubhead speed without overpowering with the right hand.
Simarly, use a double overlap grip while practicing. Put your pinky and ring finger of your right hand on top of your index and middle fingers on your left hand.
Basically, put yourself in a position where you aren't gripping too hard with your right hand, and get use to it.

Thanks for this, JT. If the double-overlap works in practice, should/would I ever consider using it during a round? is there some downside to it?

Your welcome.
Furyk uses this grip. It's up to you to decide what works best during a round.
I don't think there is much downside (if you are comfortable and confident in it) given what info you gave in OP.

Yeah! I may be on the club team for my handicap group this season. Matchplay, 3 men's singles, 1 women's single and a mixed foursome. Get to play other courses for free, and perhaps get to the post season.

the temperatures are dropping here in toronto this weekend too, but it's going to be just bearable enough to play. somewhere around the 9-10 degree range (celcius) by noon tomorrow. The course i'm going to finally opened up their range, so I'll be hitting balls in near zero degree temperatures at the start of the day, but it's better than doing nothing all winter!

Ok you have me beat winterwise. My local course is just about to open back nine for play from winter tees to winter greens this weekend. Due to rebuilding the course and the extreme winter, they will open 13 holes 11 april (real tees, real greens) and 18 holes 1 may (a few intermediate greens).

I've booked a teetime for monday.

+1. The real killer is how nice it's been the last few days.

Since we got 3-4 inches of snow overnight I had to postpone the start of the season for another week. I went to Golf Galaxy instead.

****ing Golf Galaxy.

I go inside, the first thing on the right is the putting green. I hit a couple putts with an Anser, then the next thing I grab is an Odyssey White Ice 9 340g 35".

And I can't miss with it. Seriously.

I've wasted enough time there to know the breaks which helps, but still. I'm dropping bombs, even on the holes that don't help the ball into the cup. This is not normal - I pretty much putt like ****. Even two footers are usually a challenge. This thing was money. I tried some other putters, nothing worked like the White Ice 9.

I don't know what kind of voodoo hex they put on their equipment - which of course ends the minute you walk out the door - but there's always something that's the absolute nuts while you're there.

The only thing that saved me is the fact that I intentionally didn't bring $140 with me due to past "OMG gotta have it" experiences. I'm going to pull out the White Hot XG #9s that I already have and see if they're ready for the season - if not I'm pretty sure I'll be back to the Galaxy in a couple weeks.

Golf Shoe question....

Anyone know of any reasonably priced ones (under 70) shoes that are solid that are not leather that are pretty "airy".

I hate wearing socks in summer at all and been using Nike shoes I have but over past 2 years they been smelling more and more and Id like to move on to ones that might be designed for what I am looking for.

I got my second game of the year in, it was friggen cold!

Me and my buddies are all around 11 handicaps, however one of their co-workers joined us who is a 6 handicap. What a difference in games between the three of us and him. He didn't hit it very far off the tee, he was maybe averaging 240 on every drive he hit. But the rest of his game was pretty solid. Putts were almost always hit online and came to rest near the hole, accurate pitching and chipping, etc. It just helps reinforce to me how much more important short-game is than everything else.

I had a few really memorable shots yesterday. All of us started driving the ball well on about the 8th hole until the end of the match; I've never hit so many long drives that found fairways in one round before. And I topped it off by hitting a 280 yard drive (I walked it off with my golflogic gps) on one of the back-nine holes past all 3 of them, the biggest drive I have ever hit for sure. The 3-brid that I teed off with on the 18th hole was also one of the most solidly struck tee shots I can remember hitting.

Too bad the weather doesn't appear to be co-operating this coming weekend, 3 rounds in March would be golden.
