you might have issues coming back in the future, though. i don't know anyone who's done it. also, if you get caught, you could go to jail/be ejected from teh country

afaik if you do overstay and make it to the airport and pay the fine you wont have any problems in the future but that doesnt mean you should overstay because of the latter part of your text

AND because when you are overstaying you cant really fly since some airlines check your visa status even for domestic flights and around half of the hotels I have been to check and enter your current permission of stay date to their records

I am planning on travelling around Thailand a bit, before settling in Phuket for a little while.

Bangkok Chiang Mai Ret. 06 January 2011 10 January 2011 £54.33
Bangkok Vang Vieng, Loas 10 January 2011 14 January 2011 £212.00
Bangkok Pattaya 14 January 2011 £2.00
Pattaya Ko Samui 18 January 2011 £72.00
Ko Samui Phuket 22 January 2011 £54.00
Phuket Bangkok 15 April 2011 £30.53

Those are the dates/prices - just estimates on dates really.

Will these prices go up nearer to the dates? Would it be cheaper to book now and have it set in stone or should we just book as we go? e.g. turn up and buy a ticket on the day?

You can overstay 20 years. You just pay the 20k Baht and you are welcome to come back. This has been well documented on ThaiVisa - people overstaying huge amounts of time and every time they report back no issues, they don't get blacklisted etc.

Just don't get picked up in country, then you may face criminal charges and be held at the immigration jail until you are deported.

55. the costs are in british pounds!!

But I guess the question is...

Are prices cheaper now and online?

Rather than on the day and in real life at the airport?

I've got a feeling that is £2 for the bus (or it might be £20 for a taxi, depending on how we feel).

for those of you who regularly drive motorbikes, did you already have experience driving them in your own country? if not, how did you learn? when i was there i wanted to try it so a massage girl took me to a really big empty parking lot on hers and i tried, i was so bad im pretty sure if i tried driving on the streets i would die in <5 mins.

Where/how do you actually apply for the tourist visa (in the UK)?

I see quite a lot of websites - which is best? Or do we need to go somwhere?

Thanks!!

Quite a few never drove a bike back home. I just started driving on the road. Maybe it would have been better to start on a parking lot, but you will feel within a few secs if it's gonna be a problem or not.

The problem with this strategy is two fold:
-first, Thai rules are very dynamic. So far, no one has had any problems overstaying for years. But just like they never used to verify teaching credentials a few years ago and banks didn't report to tax authority, things can change for the worse overnight. One day, they may decide that they will start blacklisting people who are doing it and you will have no way to backtrack out of your predicament.

-secondly, as HC82 mentioned, the second you have any encounter with cops, you are risking being immediately sent to jail and deported. If you ever need help from the cops you will not know what to do.

I have a ton of moto experience from the US and have many miles of riding on 4 different continents.

I am not a big fan of people calling all engine driven bikes 'motorbikes'. There's a world of difference between scooters and motorcycles and the sort and extent of trouble each can get you in.

In LOS, nothing is a problem until someone gets injured or there is property damage. If you are in an accident, you will be found at fault almost always. If you don't have a license, they will latch onto this fact to extract more money from you. (That said, I'm not sure if you need moto endorsement on your license for scooters in LOS... )

That said, a scooter is the best way to get around locally. It gives you so much more freedom to do what you want whenever you want when you don't have to rely on others to get around.

I say, go for it, the risk is worth it, but don't be stupid about it. DO use it for transportation instead of screwing around. Don't go crazy trying to pass people and filter between cars. You will get there eventually. Slow down. Don't feel pressured to go faster just because three 12 year old girls doing their makeup on one scooter all flew by you as if you were standing still. Take your time and build you your skill and comfort level. And last but not least, don't swerve around. Whenever you're not sure what to do - just go straight and steady and everyone else will filter around you....
