translate.google.com I've found surprisingly good for Thai>English translation. I think it is because Thai is such a simple language. As in:

yes they do and it happens fairly often too so I would get one before coming here or doing a thai license when you get here especially if you are staying longer

google translate or thai2english is fine if u want to find out the meaning of words or basic phrases. good luck trying to use it to make sense of most sentences thai people use.

once you learn to read some thai you will find out how simply all the tv-shows and movies are translated from english to thai.

it is a shame watching good shows that play with the language a bit but then the thai script is always just very basic thai that even i can manage to read (well i manage to read maybe 4-5 first words but still too way slow to read a 2-liner)

guess it is because thai is way simpler than english or they just want to make it super simple for the average viewer. maybe someone more experienced with thai had better input on this?

I didn't really get an answer on my previous visa question, so I figured I just change my plans:

When I enter from australia by air, can I get the 30 day visa exemption even when my return ticket is 3 months later?
And when I leave by air to myanmar/laos/cambodia/vietnam and come back will I get the 30 day visa exemption again?

Cause on the thai embassy site of my home state it states that you get a 30 day exemption, but not for more then 90 days in a 6 month period. at the same time they state that you have to show a return ticket within 30 days?

Just go to the consulate in aus. It's a 5min process and just come back the following day to pick it up. Should still be free too

anyone recommend a cheap place to stay close to the airport cause i arrive late night and never been out of country before
bkk
you aren't going to drive a motorbike in bkk, if that's where you're staying. if you're going anywhere else (with the likely exception of pattaya) motorbikes are super convenient at the least, or necessary, so at least bring whatever picture ID you have that looks most like a driver's liscence.. it might save you some money.

without more details about your trip, it's hard to give you good hotel advice, but unless you're leaving bangkok the next morning, i'd suck it up and get a hotel room somewhere away from the airport.

Any simple way to transform a Phuket KBank account into a BKK account? Or would I have to open, transfer, and close?

first, the 90 days in month period rule is an old one and not in use anymore.

2nd, you will get 30 days if you make it to thailand. you MIGHT have problems with the airline when boarding the plane in australia. some airlines/gate personel might check your return ticket and not let you board unless you show a ticket out of the country or a visa.

you will get 30 day visa exemption stamp every time you enter thailand by air, yes.

3rd, like said already, tourist visas are free atm so just get one

i think you will need to open a new account at a BKK branch.

I assume you just want to avoid the atm fees, right? or are there other reasons why you cant use the old account?

Hey. Been reading the Ask&Chatter threads for quite a while now and decided I'm taking the plunge and heading to TLOS in January. I'm a small-stakes FR grinder on a budget, so I've been looking into places on chiangmaihouse.com which have some decent 1BR for around 10KTHB/mo. Only thing is, they never talk about deposits. I assume I'm not going to be able to just say, "I'll take it!", move in, and then start paying at the end of the month. So, what's standard for security deposits on condos/apartments?

I'm an American and going to be leaving the country shortly, and am wondering if it's possible to quickly set up a kbank account to play on euro sites? Will I be able to open a kbank account without having a local thai address? Will I be able to depsit/play on euro sites with no address other than the one on my US ID card? (If they ask for scans)? What about MB/neteller?

I'm really really hoping there is a way to allow for this as an American w/o a local address.

If not, would renting some 3k baht/month apt for one month for only the address be some sort of workaround?

If anyone has any info, please let me know or can PM. ty

I'm sure it's been asked a million times... but this is an insanely long thread & the search function gives me too many posts.

I'm goin to Thailand for a few months for Muay Thai & want to know more about internet issues. More specifically, all the hotels / training camps I plan on staying at offer free wi-fi. Will this be good enough for online pokerz? Usually 12 table on stars if that makes any difference.

Is there any difference between wi-fi quality between phuket, pattaya and bangkok?

Planning to spend some time in all three cities.

Most likely it will not be good enough to play poker. You will experience frequent disconnections and wildly varying speeds.

Wifi is rubbish everywhere. You want an apartment with an ethernet connection, or a Cat CDMA air card. Note that Cat CDMA will only work outside the Bangkok/Pattaya area. For Bangkok/Pattaya you need a Hutch aircard.

Edit:

@PokerSpiv, what can I expect to pay for CDMA air card service?
Ask us about Thailand! Quote

The card is about 3000 baht and the service is about 800 baht per month. You may or may not get some free months when you buy the card depending on what promotions they have going.

Those prices are for Cat CDMA, I'm not sure about Hutch.

Standard is a one year lease and you pay three months when you move in - your first month of rent and two month security deposit.

Like everything else in Thailand, all of that and the monthly rental price will be negotiable.

Edit: Doh. Apparently I was looking at another "Baan Thai"; this one has a 200 "Water Supply Charge" and a 7 "Electricity Charge". Anyone have a rough estimate what that comes out to in THB/mo for someone who takes 2 showers a day and will most likely use the A/C constantly? I'm trying to find a way to calculate this myself but google is just making my head explode. Any help is appreciated.

If you run AC constantly electricity will be somewhat expensive. Probably 3-5k/mo depending on how big your place is.

Water should be pretty cheap.
Ask us about Thailand! Quote

7 electricity charge probably means 7 baht per unit which is double the price it actually costs. The price per unit is really only 3.5b.

i.e. The landlord is getting the bill from the government electricity company, doubling it and passing it on to you. This is fairly standard practice when renting to tourists.

At those rates if you run the AC all day every day you will probably pay somewhere between 5000-8000 baht per month for electricity.

sorry for the quick bump but ok I just finished signing up for a kbank debit card. They really didn't care about an address at all, just that I had money to give. I am hesitant to try and deposit on a euro site yet because of the other questionable stuff about the address with the pokersite. Anyone please help me out on playing on the euro sites as an American? tyvm

fwiw, you don't really need a license for a motorbike.
and people who say don't drive in BKK are pussies.

if you have no insurance and hit someone busto -> pay them off. or more likely scanario, they're in car and you're on motorbike...keep driving and they wont catch you.
if you have no insurance and hit ferrari -> they prob have enough $$ neway, just tell them it was karma. if its a girl maybe get her #.

i've been pulled over high smashing through traffic, didn't even take off my iPod to talk to cop, just gave him 200 baht and said the only thai word i know 'sawadee khup' obv
