I remember thinking he looked like the scammy kind of driver you imagine in Phuket, darker skin, poorer, crazy look in his eye but we were already moving. He was driving aggro and muttering crazily under his breath even though the traffic was fine. After a few minutes the first time he acknowledged us was to tell us in Thai to get a bus or the train.
I was kind of tilted as football isn't near the BTS so we'd need another taxi for the last leg or 3 bike taxis, and since the meter starts at a high % of the final rate a 1km journey was a nice scam for him to pull on three white guys in shorts and t-shirts. Normal drivers would refuse the journey from the start, or say it's free if they decide to drop you off because they run out of gas or traffic is bad. But I was pretty sure this guy would expect us to pay.
After a bit of back and forth of him saying he'd stop, aggro staring in the mirror and me saying no I told him his job was to drive people around, he had only one job to do, so do it. He mutters something meaning wow, your mouth is real good and pulls over at the next BTS. We'd only gone a few km, the distance of one stop and the meter was at 45 baht.
He points to the meter but I say no, because you said you'd go but didn't it should be free. The other guys were calmer than me and already getting their wallets out, which in hindsight is obv more +ev. But sometimes I'm too proud and told the guys to get out, and we start walking off.
The driver sits staring at us a few secs then gets out, walks around the cab leaving the door open, cutting me off before the skytrain steps and pulls out a knife, screaming 'ao dang!' lol. I pretty quickly came to my senses and gave him 50 baht
I'd never throw coffee on a driver like the American who got stabbed to death or be physically aggressive, but sometimes my choice of words makes them lose face. I'd be the first person to tell someone else it's not worth any confrontation / these people come from some of the poorest parts of the country / nothing they can do will make a difference to them scamming the next guy in the same way etc., but it's hard to be that zen about it when it's you in that moment
