working for the public defender's office was really interesting during law school. I would have several clients that were in jail for 3+ weeks awaiting their prelim hearing, (the hearing to determine if there was enough evidence to even have a trial) because they didn't have a few hundred bucks.

One guy actually had to stay because he had chased someone that stole his cell phone and got arrested in the scuffle trying to get it back. Sat in jail with a 4000 dollar bail because of priors and his case was instantly dismissed as soon as we could get him in front of a judge.

also, to add to the push for people to plead guilty.. if u plead guilty at your preliminary hearing in Oklahoma, most likely the judge will allow the time you spent to be time served and credited towards your sentence. If you plead not guilty, sit in jail and await trial, and are found guilty, most likely you will not get that time credited as time served.
