nyc999, start with an empty barbell. If your form is ok, add 10 lbs (total, not each side) then do 5 reps. Keep adding 10 lbs/do 5 reps until the barbell slows down or your form breaks down.

I have no belief or intention of starting at 200. I was thinking of trying 135 and moving up or down from there, but maybe I'll start with 95. And I'm a strong believer in form vs. amount of weight, so I have no problems moving down.

Don't start with 135 if you are clueless. I'm pretty sure you can handle 95 easily. It's really not that hard to just start at something like 45, get the form right, then add 20. As soon as it feels like you are actually doing something, add 10 instead. Stop when you slow down.

Follow blue-rain. People who squat over 350 lb also start with just the bar. And I don't mean when they started out, I mean on the day that they squat 350 lb.

I have been hitting the local rec center gym at 7am twice during the week. Every time I've been there, there is a pretty regular crew. Bunch of your typical fatasses walking on a treadmill at 2mph, a lot of old people on machines with their circuit checklist, a few bros doing their curls on swiss balls, but my favorite is the old Asian eliptical guy. Every time I get there, he's already on the machine and looks like he's been there a while. Dude is probably about 50, but it's tough to tell with Asians. He is going absolutely full-blast on the damn thing. He's skinny like a twig, but man, he can fly on it. I'll warmup, do my workout, and by the time I leave 45-50 minutes later, he's still chugging along on that machine. I'm tempted to send my wife in about 830 or 9 to see if he's still on it. Holy crap he is fast at it, and he appears to never stop. He always has this super serious look on his face like he is being chased by rabid dogs or something.

In the unlikely case that someone uses a barbell, they will only ever remove the weight they used if you make it abundantly clear that you are going to use that barbell straight after them.

Wow...I've been thinking of starting something, but thinking that 200 would be at the bottom end of a range I could do for 5+ reps.

Anyway, an actual question--is there a good site to see proper form? I see people laughing itt about people's bad form, and I assume bad form can lead to injuries (or at least slower progression). Videos or something? I'll do my homework myself on a SS program...

hmm is this generally tru for all gyms?
i go around 9:30 - 10:30, and out of the 30-40 ppl @ the gym, usually 3 or 4 are woman I would bang (ie, not hot, but would still siihp).

when I would go at peak hours, (like 5-7pm) there would me way more hot women.

I have never gone early in morning, only a few times like 5:30 or 6:00am after long poker session.

I am still keeping the log because I still want to lose weight. I don't care if people are critical or mean. I do care when they use the thread to attack me during an unrelated conversation. It's stupid, and it makes you look stupid. There are about 6 other posters in this thread who disagreed with what I said about Planet Fitness and did it without being complete tools.
It's not an unrelated conversation. You haven't earned the right to have an opinion about whether a particular gym franchise is adequate for achieving one's goals.

Found a thread where people were discussing their Planet Fitness experiences (horror stories).

Guy had a trainer come up to him and told him to use lighter dumbells, he was clapping them together at the top during the exercise, which meant he didn't have them under control, and the noise was bothering other people.

Another guy had an employee come up to him on the treadmill and tell him he was running on it too fast and that it might "upset" the other people in the gym.

Another guy (amateur body builder type) went in one to look around and check it out and they basically chased him out, giving him a watered down version of a Southern redneck's "We don't take kindly to ur types 'round here!" routine.

LOL. Ok, I haven't "earned the right to have an opinion" on this subject. Let me know when I can submit my thesis for your approval and be allowed to debate freely with you.

Clapping the dumbbells together annoys me greatly. Since I'm sure the vast majority of people I know don't actually try to press them together, instead they think the exercise is a stabilization one where you attempt to not drop a DB after slamming them together as hard as possible OH and letting the random concussive force provide a varied and modulating stimulus.

You haven't earned the right for your opinion to be taken seriously. I don't go spouting off about underwater basketweaving or how to play sngs.

an opinion is either taken seriously or it isn't. "earning" and "rights" have nothing to do with it. i don't have to take jesus's opinion seriously if i don't want to (especially if i'm jewish)

this is pretty nitty of me, but i think it matters in this case. clearly, tony can say whatever the **** he wants, and people can take it as seriously or not-seriously as they please.
