About the only thing I could imagine where it's good is if mew or mewtwo get released and you don't have one yet.
That said, I just found my first, hooray!

It's def cool to sink dust into as a unique, chansey like bottom defender. However, I'd only do it if you're like level 32+ and can get it to super high CP, for ditto. Then it will be a decent defender, always becoming a super high CP, or at least forcing people to waste a slot on a magikarp.

So, I got to put this to the test somewhat the other day. Someone had a >400 CP ditto in a gym near me, the biggest I'd ever seen. So, I threw at it an 1100ish CP Raticate I would otherwise trash. The ditto morophed into a Ratticate that was pretty close in CP to mine but still slightly less, and I beat it pretty easily.
Thus, I guess a decently strong ditto will force an attacking trainer to use the majority of one of their 6 slots on just the ditto, but that's only relevant for level 6+ gyms, a rarity nowadays, and it's not like it's all that good for you to be the one with the ditto in a level 8 gym. You're still likely to get knocked out, even if the attacker gets bored before finishing off the gym.
Anyway, I still don't see a reason to use a ditto as a gym defender instead of an actual good monster (not that I bother with that nowadays either), nor do I see any reason to attack a monster with anything other than something you'd just trash after the battle rather than revive.
