First time I've drafted black online. I'm 2-0 and won the first game of round 3. I passed up a mind sludge for the shepherd early on after getting a ton of the removal (including the 2x journey) but I was light on creatures, but then I got a million 4 drops so that was somewhat bad but it still is pretty solid I think.

Edit: 3-0

If you go to their help links they don't even say that there are 8 player in the tourney. My understanding for all the 8-player tournaments go something like this:

8 players * 3 booster packs = 24 booster packs (45 cards per player that you get to keep -- everyone is even at this point in theory)

8 players * 2 tickets each = $16 prize pool.

Prizes: ??? this is where I get confused. I'm assuming they are throwing some free or discounted packs into the mix to make the tournaments worth playing.

In an 8-4, 12 packs in prizes would be ~$48, so they are adding ~$32 to the prize pool?

In a 4-3-2-2 , 11 packs in prizes would be ~ $44, so they are adding ~28 to the prize pool?

On a Swiss, this is not very clear to me, but it appears there will be a total of 12 wins for a total of 12 packs in prizes, for ~$48, and ~$32 added to the prize pool?

I guess I am going the opposite route of many of you. A poker player turned Magic player. LOL. I love that there is so much more strategy involved but wish they would lay out their site a little better.
Swiss you get a pack for each game you win, so you could get 2 for winning the first 2, the last 2, first and last, etc. You never get knocked out and always get to play 3 games. These are great for a beginner because you get more practice and will feel like you get your money's worth while you get better instead of just losing round 1 and getting eliminated in a 4-3-2-2 or 8-4.

I never really thought about the prizes but yeah I guess they give out more in prizes than they receive in tix. Though it's all digital so they lose nothing to give out packs and just make inf since most people won't have enough to draft again even if they win some prizes so they just end up buying even more.

Oh and usually packs and things you purchase from the store show up instantly, but since the set just came out it tends to lag sometimes. You can often get packs cheaper from classifieds with tix, and if you have Stars or Tilt there are a few people on there that take $$ transfers for tix, and the tix go for less than they do in the store.

Yeah it ends up just being a very, very, very, very expensive video game for most people.

omg I won with that Iona deck, never having cast her once. I subbed her out for a couple games against a slowish RG deck but I'm gonna haveta chalk this up to being xpert

... yes this lame victory made me happy enough to post twice in a row. Sorry?

1-3 in sealed with following:

Tried WB, UB, GB, settled on GB as time ran out - was drawn to black by the removal, mind sludge, quest, and crypt ripper. The pool seemed pretty weak, so I really didn't know what to build here.

To add insult to injury, match 1 game 1, I lost against someone who accidentally submitted 130 cards (he thought he did it correctly).

Haven't been able to play at all on MODO. Ugh. Been busy and my wife is leaving town tomorrow, so I am spending tonight (mostly) with her. Saturday is the PTQ. I will get in a few sealed queues tomorrow, skipping FNM probably.

Meh yeah I think you might the right color choice that's a tough pool. I really dislike needlebite trap so I would have run the 2nd soul stair expedition over it but you have mana acceleration so w/e it's prob fine.

Edit: Actually I'd prob just run another land you need to hit your drops to get your creatures going. The deck actually isn't that bad.

Thoughts on this? I started red after opening Kazuul Warlord and getting passed a burst lightning but then I got cut bad pack one and somewhat pack 3. I think the allies I got though are still pretty solid. I'm not sure if I'm underrating quest for the gemblades, explorer's scope would have also been good but I don't know what to take out

Edit: Ugh so standard to get crushed round 1 of my first 4-3-2-2. Bad land draws and just too slow vs a faster WG deck :/ I guess it's ok since I opened another fetchland.

Edit 2: lolol started another draft and opened another fetchland shippppp.

Are you nuts? Quest for the Gemblades is insane.

Isn't cobra trap terrible? I actually like slaughter cry and it would make your curve smaller. Isn't it weird that this set requires 18 land? I seem to remember other ones only needing 16-17 for two colours but even 17 is sketchy for most decks I've seen.

Quest for the gemblades is insane?! Really? Hmm... I find it pretty easy to play around and whatever advantage it gets just leaves you open for 2-1s... I guess I'm just prejudiced against aura-like spells. It's a decent 20th-22nd card but I don't really like it.

How would you guys build a deck with 4x Violent Ultimatum?

It prob will be tough if you are trying to be competitive since that probably means you are playing jund (unless you are going 5 color or something) and I doubt a build with those in it will be as good as a standard list of aggro jund or control jund.

Yeah, it's easy to play around like playing around Seal of Strength. Which is to say, it's not.

Yeah, that's the kind of feedback I got from a couple other people. Playing it in turns 3-4 would be amazing though. I'm definitely a novice compared to most of you guys so some feedback would be nice. This is what I've come up with so far:

4x Harrow
4x Khalni Heart Expedition
4x Fireball
4x Violent Ultimatum
4x Lightning Bolt

4x Lotus Cobra
4x Birds of Paradise
4x Rampaging Baloths
3x Scute Mob
3x Oracle of Mul Daya

22 lands

Personally I think green is a poop colour in general for draft, I already mentioned my hatred for anything that even smells like an aura (although the new version of holy strength has its merits), and being able to "play around it" just means I'd rather take a few to the face than block whatever creatures you're sending at me to set up the card. People are pretty terrible right now but even now the drafts are getting faster and faster as they catch on. Again, it's not a terrible card but there's about a bajillion creatures I'd pick over it in green.

I would too, but the card is very good. Even if you know the guy has that card active, it doesn't make it magically OK. "Oh boy, now that I know he has that, it's all good." It's still a huge pain in the ass.

God adlfkjasd;lkjadlfja I run so bad at 4-3-2-2s. I just got inf manaflooded with that deck even though it was insane and lost round 1 again.

Try #3..

The entire first pack was pretty much the nut worst thing possible so I'm surprised I got anything that resembles a deck. I think my first 4 picks were welkin tern, hideous end, harrow, steppe lynx and didn't improve much until pack 2.

I think this is a good build, I could see bringing in the kraken hatchlings against some decks but I don't think I should main deck them.

Edit: YESSSSSSSSSSS finally won the first match. I think the wayfinder can be pretty good if you have an eel in play and its always another flier but against most decks I'm probably gonna end up siding the kraken in for it anyway.
