I'm building a new rig, my current system is aging (E6600 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo overclocked on air to 2.93ghz).

recently bumped my graphics from an X1900XT 512mb to a 6670 Radeon 1GB (yes, I'd rather have gotten the 6770 model but got this at a great price)

Looking to build a 4GB Win7 64-bit rig with a Sandy Bridge i3 processor, wasn't planning to overclock this time around.

Currently running an AMD Phenom X2 550 and HD5770. Considering an upgrade to a quadcore AMD. Any recommendations?

As a test you could try out BC2, that should give you a good idea of where you'll be at with BF3.

Then who wins?
Not exactly what you're asking for, but it looks like this guy tested dual core vs. quad core (using 4870 x 2 for each test). http://www.overclock.net/pc-games/65...e-vs-quad.html

Looks like there isn't much difference EXCEPT for games like BC2. Just the jump from dual to quad core doubled the FPS's from 39 to 80. I would expect BF3 to respond similarily. There could be more to that link, I just read the first little bit.

I tried BC2 for 360, wasn't a huge fan. Haven't even bothered to pick it up at $6 in the Steam sales. I'll probably just wait on BF3 itself. I should definitely be able to at least play it with this rig, it's just going to be a matter of what settings. When I first built this I figured the video card would be the bottleneck, but now it's looking like it might be the CPU, so I'm just trying to see what's out there for AMD processors. Switching to Intel is out of the question due to cost (and laziness of switching out the motherboard).

Edit: You totally weren't responding to me. I need more sleep...

If the chipset changes and you gotta change motherboard too, go for a sandy bridge. Seriously, the gap between AMD and Intel Sandy Bridge is incredible. If the chipset is the same, get the best AMD quad core you can get and leave the six core in the store imo.

Edit: Apparently there is a change ( from AM2+ to AM3 socket ), so if your motherboard doesn't support AM3, go for the change 100%.

Consoles are only good for sports games. If you want to enjoy RTS or FPS go PC, imho

Also it's an AM3 socket. It's only about 1.5 years old, budget gaming rig that I made because my old computer died and I wanted to play some Source games.

On my computer at work, so no sound, but the visuals were stunning. Did I see a little IED-finding robot in the footage? What was that little thing? Must be part of a specialist class

does anyone know if there will be/is a beta on the PS3 (or xbox)? i would like to hear some reviews that arent from PC, especially how those huge maps w/jets work out with only 24 players. maybe they shrink those maps or take them out completely?

Yes.

The maps are much smaller on console.

well if a sandybridge system was running at 60fps, a high end quad/hex core phemom was running at 50fps, everything else being similar.
So not only do you need a quad core, it needs to be a powerful cpu.
I expect bulldozer to level the playing field in this respect though.
Obviously your cheapest option is get a phenom and oc it if your mb is up to it.

Edit: That might just be because the amd cpu's haven't been properly optimized yet, which is plausible cause pretty much all the systems they use to showcase/run and develop bf3 are on intel based systems.

I've never played any of the BF games, how is it decided who gets to fly plans? Do you have to go find them and then take off in them or something?

Yep. Typically they will be at your home base.
