I see what your thinking, lets say we have 440, you figure I'll spend 115 on cpu and 330 on graphics card and get better fps, but actually if you spend 220 on a quad core and 220 on a graphics card you will get better fps.
The 2500k can be over clocked up to 5ghz and offers the best price/performance, however you can pick up the quad core 2300 for $185 if you want the cheapest option and aren't going to over clock:

I spent ~2500 on a decent gaming pc in sept '10...
i7 930 2.8ghz 12gb ram, ATI Radeon HD5970

I play games 1/10 the amt I did 7-8 years ago... So don't pay much attention to hardware much anymore..

Will my pc be good enough to play bf3 on high/ultra settings?

And...

Pc or xbox for this game?(Assuming pc prob..)

These videos make me wish I had a decent pc, but I don't understand most of what is being said ITT, much less think I'd be able to build one.

But the game does look great and still looking forward to playing the console version.

You would be amazed by how easy it is to build ( as in put together the components in the case ) a PC. These days it's only really a game of match the colors. Green card goes into green slot, blue card into blue slot etc. + every card only fits a single slot, so you can't even go wrong.

Yeah, I'm self-taught to build PC's. Probably started back in the Pentium II or III days if I recall correctly.

Essentially I started out with upgrades. So I'd add a CD burner (before DVD burners, huzzah!) and then add a sound card, graphics card, hard drive, cpu, etc.

Eventually I had done every single piece by itself, so pretty much was able to build a complete system from the ground up.

If you start out with upgrades you can work your way into becoming a system builder. You'll get more bang for your buck rather than paying Dell or whoever to build for you.

Plus, with the internet now, there's tons of step-by-step visual and video guides available to make it a breeze.

Anyone get the feeling this game must look REALLY bad on 360 in comparison because they arent showing absolutely anything to do with consoles? I know journos got to play it on the ps3 last month and the comments werent particularly great, saying they didnt even get a version with fully destructible enviroments and the game looked not dissimilar to BC2. It sounded as if they were still working hard to fit it on the consoles and someone from gamespy or ************ or one of the gaming websites said they would be surprised if the game made release date. EA obviously cant afford to push the game back so its coming out, but a lack of even a polished console trailer is worrying. I get BF3 is a PC game but i hope it doesnt become a trend that all games running on newer game engines only get shown to the public on monster gaming rigs whilst keeping the console versions hidden away until release day.

I doubt it looks any worse than BC2. Let's not forget the 360 is the rough equivalent of a mid-grade gaming PC from ~2005.

So what are the rules to get into the beta? Can I pre-order a copy on Origin and still get into it?

I think your current setup will give an outstanding frame rate given your desired resolution.

By way of comparison, I've got almost the same setup (although two 5870 in crossfire, rather than a 5970) and expect to run it awesomely on very high on a 30" 2560x1600 monitor, and probably will reduce quality to run across multiple monitors.

FPS will probably drop if you move to multiple monitors, but will still be playable imo. You've got a super high-end setup still today.

I briefly played the alpha multiplayer build, and it pretty much told me I needed to build a new pc.

Just for this game. Oh, and for poker too.

Is there something to be said for a machine that runs software designed specifically for its capabilities? For me, the biggest frustration about running a game like this on PC is knowing exactly what my computer isn't doing optimally every time I fire it up.

It's much easier to accept a console and its games for what they are. And there's value in knowing your friend who just bought a brand new 360 is going to have the same experience as you.

This doesn't change the facts of the discussion, of course, but it does add some practical perspective.

Obviously any decent pc will run this much better than a console, but in order of magnitudes, a high end pc today is 10 times more powerful than an xbox 360 but we are not seeing that in games, admittedly most are console ports.
But the thing is developers can move around textures and stuff on an xbox from hdd cache to ram and assign it to the most optimal locations. They basically have direct access to the hardware. On the PC their are layers of crap to get through, os drivers etc that handle all that for you, it's no where near as optimal but it uses brute force to run faster.

Snap! I did think BF3 WAS Mike Tysons Punch Out. ...but I also thought PC gamers were secure in their medium and didn't need to constantly bash consoles. Live and learn.

I'm just sick of walking into a game store and seeing half a small shelf for PC games and then a gazillion $60 console games, grrrrr.

LOL @ walking into a game store to buy a PC game. That's what Steam, DirectDrive and Origin are all for.
