I don't disagree with being anti-polo if you are moving in the dressier direction. I bought my first polo in a long time two years ago but prior to that also just went with various kinds of dress shirts. I highly suspect though that his objection was not that polo's are too casual but the opposite.

i wear t-shirts or button ups. polos are t-shirts that have 3-4 buttons and a collar and usually have a stupid logo in the chest. buttonups always look nicer than polos. i see no use for them.

I never wear shorts except at the pool. Not even in 95 degree 100% humidity here in Atlanta. As far as polos go, I only wear ones without cuffs, and I prefer the material to be lighter with a bit of sheen, compared to the thicker cotton like Ralph Lauren polos.

You know there are different kinds of fabrics? Try lightweight cotton or linen

I've never found this to be an issue if you buy shirts from proper summer materials. Canada isn't as hot as southern states but I've spent plenty of time in Vegas and I have a place on the Mediterranean. As long as the heat is a dry heat you're fine. If you get really high temperatures and humidity then it might be an issue but I have never run into that combination.

------------

I'm fairly against wearing t-shirts. There are a few situations where they are acceptable but it is really limited.

The same applies for shorts except the number of situations where it is acceptable is even more restricted.

You forgot to mention the part where you should never in a million years wear jorts

No. Either Euro polos are awful, or you just haven't found the right place to buy polos. Good polos don't have more than 2 buttons, and 4 would be a total spew. 3 is just suboptimal. T-shirts can also have logos on the chest. Good logoless polos exist. You just have to do a bit of shopping around.

A fitting solid color v-neck is the nuts in the summer too.

Depends on your body composition. If you are overweight, a tight polo is the absolute nut low. A button down might be your only option then.

Nothing wrong with a good quality fitted t-shirt otherwise. The less busy the shirt (logos, designs) the better.

It's pretty hard to expect good responses when you ask such general questions. Not sure if you expect people to spend lots of time finding exact items suitable for you under your budget constraints or what?

Don't like the jacket, I don't see where you would wear something like that. Shoes are ok.

Go to a J-Crew at some mall near and tell them you're looking to pick up some summer clothes. you don't have to buy clothes there, but they are geared towards people under 30 and receive some training on how to make outfits appear congruent, fit properly, all that so they can get you in the ballpark at least.

You can get shorts in any color or fabric you want, they don't have to be the khaki style. As long as they fit proportionally everything else is personal preference. You can also find pants in fabrics which breathe well like linen for muggy DFW summers.

Re: polo shirts....

A polo shirt really isn't any different from a t-shirt except they cost more and you have to maintain them more due to the collar. There's a reason why they are often referred to as collared tees.

I think it's hardly a faux pas to wear them, but why would you? Either step up to a legit shirt or just wear a t-shirt. Polo shirts are great for clothing makers and retailers but are an objectively poor choice for consumers.
