edit: a couple caveats... I refuse to wear khaki shorts and don't really have a problem wearing pants even know it'll be hotter than f***. I'm also not into sandals and prefer some sort of minimalist style shoes which are not Vibrams. I've got a pair of grey/red shoes... but yeah just seeing if I could get any ideas before just go out and wing it.
Go to a J-Crew at some mall near and tell them you're looking to pick up some summer clothes. you don't have to buy clothes there, but they are geared towards people under 30 and receive some training on how to make outfits appear congruent, fit properly, all that so they can get you in the ballpark at least.
You can get shorts in any color or fabric you want, they don't have to be the khaki style. As long as they fit proportionally everything else is personal preference. You can also find pants in fabrics which breathe well like linen for muggy DFW summers.
Re: polo shirts....
A polo shirt really isn't any different from a t-shirt except they cost more and you have to maintain them more due to the collar. There's a reason why they are often referred to as collared tees.
I think it's hardly a faux pas to wear them, but why would you? Either step up to a legit shirt or just wear a t-shirt. Polo shirts are great for clothing makers and retailers but are an objectively poor choice for consumers.
