If you never wear another shirt color besides white and blue, you'll never make a mistake. This should be the starting approach and then go from there.
Purple shirts are fine. Just go for a lavender and not a plum type purple, and probably better if it's a pattern.

i wear black shoes all the time, mostly for going out to bars/clubs. I tend to wear blue/grey/white a lot tho.

Do you guys above not wear black dress pants to work?
12-29-2013 , 11:33 PM
I have black chinos that I wear and get lots of compliments on. Have a more casual black belt that looks really nice that keeps it from looking overly formal.

What do you now wear? What is your area of work?

Gray? Khaki?

I like black

Whenever I wear a suit, I usually wear black shoes with it.
But I agree with your post.

I thought black shoes are absolutely standard in a law firm.

No, purple shirts are not fine. It's never the optimal choice.

I never wear black anything besides shoes and those only with a suit.
12-30-2013 , 05:31 AM
Why don't you like black again, Spurious?
12-30-2013 , 06:18 AM
Not versatile, almost never the optimal color for any outfit, quite boring and I like other colors just a lot more.

lol @ black not versatile

Does anyone (besides Henry) wear dress pants on casual occasions as well? I am new to wearing dress pants and probably the only one in my city under 25 wearing dress pants atm (~100k people mostly students)

Brown is much more versatile, black can only really be worn with blue/grey/white. Of course it can work with other colours but its generally difficult.

Still looking for a new versatile coat. What do you guys think about this?

I already asked the seller if it's available in navy. If it's not, should I still buy it in this colour? Price is €420.

Instead of focusing on what other people wear you should just focus on yourself being as well dressed as possible. The vast majority of people dress ridiculously bad, so stop thinking about them.

what colour is that coat? would prefer it in navy or grey.
12-30-2013 , 09:42 AM
I have no idea what that colour is called.

I recently bought this peacoat. I consider it versatile. It's around the same price point as above.

Looks good. I'd really prefer to start with navy, though.

What about this one?

It's also available in navy: http://www.billyreid.com/product/peacoat-navy-9.html

I don't like the shoulder straps and the buttons on the one you posted. Too military/sailor looking, but that's just personal opinion. I really like the peak lapels on the one I have, which is rare on peacoats.
12-30-2013 , 10:28 AM
I think your coat is better in terms of design/lines. The only problem I have with that one is that it seems like the colour looks a bit faded out or something it that makes sense?
12-30-2013 , 11:25 AM
I wouldn't call it faded. It's a very dark navy compared to standard navy pea coats. The one you posted is cotton so it will have more of a sheen to it in pictures.

Dress shoes (I am not entirely sure what the range is for dress shoes) and jeans are absolutely fine. Jeans arent worker's clothing anymore. Also, what would the range of non-dress shoes be?
Dress shoes is a vague term. When I say no dress shoes with jeans I'm referring to all oxfords and monk straps. Bluchers are fine.
