Sizes are the problem. If you are a common size very little selection but I've bought $500-800 shoes for $300-$400 and I bought an identical shirt to one I paid full price for at 50%.

There are plenty of US companies that do this same thing. Generally the issue is sizing as well. Although it's more common for companies to do it online since a lot of these companies are trying to clear space in their warehouse.

In the States Outlet stores for a lot of places are not actually selling the same items. They are selling inferior items made specifically for the Outlet Stores.

I do know the Nordstrom has Nordstrom Last Call which I believe is the same quality and just out of season but then stuff like Calvin Klein if you go to the outlet store you are getting inferior products.

Henry, could you clear some PM space?

I think it's Neiman Marcus Last Call and Nordstrom Rack. Never been to a Last Call but I believe it is actually all things that were once in a Neiman Marcus Store. The Nordstrom Rack is more comparable to an outlet store but a bit better I think. I did buy a pair of Allen Edmonds at the Rack and have seen other pairs there. My guess is they do have some product from Nordstrom stores but a majority is made specifically for the Rack.

I don't know about the entire inventory but I know for a fact some of the stuff in Nordstrom Rack is identical to what Nordstrom carries.

henry and others who feel the same way,

what's wrong with jeans? I think you wrote a while ago that you basically don't wear them at all.

nothing is wrong with them. i think henry mentioned that as you get older you just start wearing them less and less as you expand your wardrobe.
11-28-2012 , 08:18 PM
iirc he said that he thinks that jeans should be really marginal part of a wardrobe, which is considerably greater role than he gave them previously.

I might be remembering wrong, but I dont have time to look it up right now, sry in case Im mistaking something.

You are remembering correctly.

Jeans are not appropriate for most venues and they are rarely an ideal choice of clothing. I didn't wear jeans (outside of places like the cottage or doing physical work) since the middle of high school. I used to have a zero tolerance for jeans in public but I have relaxed that somewhat to jeans being acceptable for daytime wear if you are not doing anything beyond errands or maybe breakfast or lunch with a close friend. I would never go out in jeans at night, groups of people, or with people who were not close friends.

Why do you not deem them appropiate? Also what do you wear instead? Is this an american thing? In the UK jeans are fine no matter what your doing unless a specific dress code is required. Even for nights out, jeans + shoes + shirt/polo/t-shirt is the standard.

I wear dress pants.

Dress codes have pretty much disappeared over the years but it used to you couldn't get into a lot of nicer clubs wearing jeans. Now I'd say that is pretty rare but not completely extinct. Europe was even dressier -- this is a long time ago but I remember casinos having business casual as the dress code in Europe. That doesn't seem to be the case any more.

Assuming you are not into some weird niche like being a goth or a vampire when you go out you basically have four options -- dive bars, places that cater to people the first two or three years they can drink, loserish top-40 places, and nice places. I'd say jeans are inappropriate for the only one those places you should be attending.

Regardless of appropriateness it is a matter of giving yourself as much of an advantage as you can. We just discussed the halo effect two weeks ago. I'd say dressing up gives you an advantage in every aspect including picking up girls.

i'm a huge fan of these chinos:

looks so much better than jeans (although im not as against jeans as henry is)
11-29-2012 , 02:27 PM
great link, i need to try those.

I don't wear jeans that often myself. I do need a new pair, but I'm definitely digging what disko posted. Those Cerulean Blue ones are sick.

But a nice pair of jeans can go really well with certain outfits, and I wouldn't rule them out entirely.

I was going to ask exactly this, but then I realized that I subconsciously assume that people in dress pants care about dressing well more than people in jeans do, even though like 99% of young guys (which includes succesful guys) wear jeans on regular basis. I also feel different when I wear dress pants.

It's weird, I'd never even consider that jeans are not ideal, had I not think about it after henry's reply.

That said, in my experience jeans are fairly standard even in the best/most expensive places, so it can't be that bad.

i own the gunmetal a couple of tan/khaki (i think the british tan?) and a navy. sometimes i think navy was a bad choice since i could wear jeans instead if i wanted blue pants. but yeah, these are top-notch quality, i wear them to death. worth every penny. they also have a 1.5inch inseam so you can do plenty of tailoring. feel free to buy a size larger if they dont have your size.

I know it was mentioned here before but I can't seem to find it, but what makes a good dress shirt? I need to buy a new one and am wondering what would be stylish and affordable.

I'm looking at something like this: http://bananarepublic.gapcanada.ca/b...&pid=462707233

Now would you wear a shirt like this with a suit? Is it ok to wear a shirt like this with a sportcoat/blazer?

I'm also looking for a sportcoat/blazer to make my every-day look more fashionable. I'd most likely be wearing it with dark jeans (or chino's if I decide to buy a pair, never tried one on before). What would you recommend in a price range sub $200? Is there anything even remotely good below $100?

Edit: Found a look that I think looks good, agree?

http://www.gapcanada.ca/browse/produ...&pid=240158013

I'd get a blazer that looks something like that, and buy a couple dress shirts to wear underneath. Would I want non-iron dress shirts or casual dress shirts?

NOTE: I'm a student wanting to become more stylish and classy with my dress style. I want to look more presentable and professional in every day life.

dont buy that color shirt. i would suggest wearing a button down collar if you're going to be wearing a blazer and no tie.

that blazer isnt terrible. at your price point i would highly recommend club monaco and suit supply for both shirts and blazers; both are exponentially better quality (and fashionable) than gap and BR

Only applies to a few clubs in France and Monaco these days.

Henry17, with dress pants do you say you mostly use tucked in shirts or untucked for say going out eat, bar, shopping, hanging out, ect. Also is there a such thing as untucked dress shirts or they called casual shirts.

On a different note went to a stylist to get my hair did and i think it looks terrible thinking about going back to my barber, feel like a million bucks usually when i leave. I can never make up my mind on style of cut, so i've just gotten "i call it short between 1-2in business hair cut with part going left to right".
11-29-2012 , 06:56 PM
You shouldnt be wearing dress pants and untucked shirts, save chinos for that. I have a feeling henry is going to say all button downs should be tucked tho.

Usually if you are wearing untucked you should be wearing what a lot of places call sport shirts or casual shirts, although imo some dress shirts are fine, but I have a feeling henry will disagree.
11-29-2012 , 07:02 PM
Always tucked.

Button downs and jeans could be untucked but that isn't a look I have never been into.

I have no idea what they are called but there is a difference both in cut and in the fabric of shirts that you wear untucked.

Would a non-iron dress shirt work with a blazer, such as this one:

http://bananarepublic.gapcanada.ca/b...&pid=231390033

Or a "casual shirt", such as this one:

http://bananarepublic.gapcanada.ca/b...&pid=231820043

Yes, I'm not going to be wearing a tie. Just trying to grasp what type of shirt to wear with a blazer so I buy the ones that look good.

I looked into club monaco and suit supply, both are non-existent where I live. Damn smaller cities!
