lol way to miss the point and repeat everything I just said. You understand I wasn't advocating buying $100 quartz right?

Except that you said an Invicta is going to get more compliments than a $1000 watch. I guess it just depends on who you hang out with, but I'd imagine a classic looking Frederique Constant that you can buy for around $1k is going to get more compliments than a tacky Invicta.

I would say this is rarely true, invicta basically just copies higher priced(higher than 1k$) and makes the same general design but butches the workings/quality of the watch. That said there are some bad looking invictas, but I would say most brands have a few watches I think look bad. Watches are subjective.

I dunno. I have zero watch knowledge (see previous page for evidence) and I think those watches posted by yourself and Amoeba are sooooooo much better looking and more expensive looking than the Invicta's I have seen

I don't know what I'm doing posting in a style thread, but I need my watch to tell time, and communicating my status is a distant second place reason for me. It's faster than taking out my phone, I can be more discreet with my watch when not wanting others to know I'm checking the time, and I can use my watch in places/circumstances where I shouldn't be taking out my phone and looking at it (in some classes, on the plane, when in international waters). I always know where my watch is (my wrist), but I will have to search the walls for a clock that may not be there. I know that my watch has the correct time, whereas I don't know how off the other clocks I'd look at may be.

So you are in classrooms that don't have clocks? Does your phone not have a flight mode? Do you really need to know the time every 10 minutes? I don't see one situation in here that actually would require you to have a watch.

The discreet factor makes no sense because either way, someone can tell if you are looking at the time.

I guess you wear a ****ty watch. You don't buy an expensive watch to tell the time, and the cheaper luxury watches can be fairly inaccurate.

It's just like cars. You don't drive at top speed with a Ferrari all the time.

Hell, you can buy a lower end Mercedes E Class (E200, E250, or E300) that is no faster than a typical 4 cylinder sedan. And that's like $50k. I can get a far faster car that drives better for $50k, but it isn't going to be as luxurious.

Or I could get a Honda or Toyota that is going to be more reliable for much cheaper. So when it comes to the actual function of a car, the Hondas and Toyotas are better.

Maybe not the best comparison since high end watches are of very high quality, but you aren't paying for the actual function of the watch when you are spending a good amount money on one. I'll stick with my super accurate cell phone or computer for telling the time.

That is where a watch is worn. Are you claiming that people buy shirts with sleeves that are too long because they want to hind their watch? If you mean wearing your watch on top of your shirt or you r cuff open to show off your watch only douches do that and they usually are showing off a fake Rolex.

You think some guy buying a Laurent Ferrier is just buying it to tell that small .01% of the population that recognizes that brand something?
People who buy expensive **** are only trying to communicate to other people like themselves. No one gives a **** about impressing people below them. This is the difference between buying Prada and Hilfiger / Polo.

Yes. Everything. Sometime my personal enjoyment though overlaps with having people treat me as special. It feels good.

jfc you guys are acting like clowns. Yes, Gus, people use their watches to tell the time. I went without a watch for a week (I thought I lost it, I had taken it off in my car) and I checked my wrist many times. Classrooms at my school have one clock in the middle of the back wall. Probably 30% of students are blind to the clock and the 50% can't sneek a peek without being caught by the professor. Stop the non-sense arguing over dumb **** ITT. Every person uses their possessions differently than every other person.

I think the watch talk should go to the EDF thread b/c this is AIDS

Is there some reason you need to know the time with that level of precision? Even without a phone or watch I always know what time it is give or take ten minutes.

.

But maybe it's just my good sense of time, so I don't feel like I need to check the time constantly.

I never wear a watch because I don't own a good one. I've never felt the need to get one in everyday situations because clocks are everywhere.

I'll start off agreeing with this edit reason: "The point is, you don't buy a nice watch to tell the time."

I'm doing residency now (graduated med school one year ago), so a lot of my time is spent in patients' rooms or other such areas that don't have clocks or have clocks behind me (and I can't turn around when talking to a patient). The one classroom I go into has a clock that had the wrong time for half a year before I fixed it. I can more discreetly glance at my watch when the other person looks away for a moment than I can with my cell phone.

As for the bolded, I actually included that line in my post originally but then deleted it. I do obsessively check the time, sometimes every 10 minutes.

I have no such internal sense of time. That's why I check so often. Whenever I forget to put on my watch, I freak out a bit because I get lost in time too easily.

I'm a college professor. The last two institutions I've taught at (big state schools) had no clocks in most of the classrooms.

Also, I wear a watch to tell time.

I need to get a suit for internship interviews. I'd like to spend around $500.

Where should I go? Men's Wearhouse is having a buy one get one free sale so if I can find a friend looking for a suit that'd be great but I've heard bad things about this chain. I've read good things about online tailors where you can get a suit for around $500.

I'm open to all sugestions!
08-29-2012 , 02:52 AM
Dont do mens warehouse.

Look into online tailors: Suit Supply/Black Lapel/ Indochino

The classic navy is probably best bet for you.

Go to a tailor to get your measurements and then enter them online and order a suit:

Suit supply or club Monaco

Get everything tailored. If you're normal size: get jacket taken in, jacket sleeves shortened, pants hemmed, pants tapered at a minimum

The J&J stuff is nice. I saw the Aviator shirt in my local Bloomingdales at full $65 price. Liked the shirt, but not spending that much on it.

I ordered an Indochino suit. I went to review my measurements and my age, weight, etc. were blank. Everything was default. I hope it saved my original measurements!

Dman didnt expect it to be that fast:

You could have gotten suit+shirt+tie for 300$ here:

http://www.thedailyhookup.com/nation.../city:national

You still might be able to cancel and reorder, just email them.

Although it is MTM, some things may be off, make sure to post a fit post when you get it.

Thanks! Will cancel and reorder. So I buy the deal through that site then use the code on indo?

Can I get that same navy blue suit you linked? What things are good to add to the suit? It has options like pen pockets and so forth.

Its for a suit of 379$ so if your suit is more than that you pay difference(deal is 320$ not 200$). So it depends on what suit you want. If you get the suit I linked, then yes it will be 320$ and you get a voucher code I believe for inodchino.

Also some suits are not made for interviews, your interview suit should be conservative, and you should avoid things liek red ties as that is considered to be a power tie and comes off wrong at interviews.

For interviews Navy suit> grey suit. Also you might want to look into a 3 peice essential navy and just not wear the vest to interviews. Its cheaper to buy as a set, and vests look good in some instances.

i thought navy suit with red tie is about as conservative as u can go???

Just get a speedmaster (moon version), you can use it to time stuff, it impresses most watch collectors and will get interest from those that have no knowledge in watches. Probably one of the best timepieces you can buy without spending too much. I wonder how the price has changed since the NASA mars landing...hopefully not much.
08-30-2012 , 11:49 AM
I emailed support, no reply yet. I hope it cancels on time. I may pass on Indo as my interviews are soon. I can't risk it.
