See it's over-the-top praise like this that will make me start to hate this movie, as opposed to simply thinking it's "okay":

Spoiler:
For starters, it needs to be leaner. He doesn't need to sleep with the kid's mom, that's about 6 minutes that should have been on the cutting room floor. There's no need to show him in love with that prostitute at the beginning, get rid of all of that.

The movie is so derivative of so many other movies, which would be fine if it did interesting things. The telekinesis I don't like, the quiet family he falls in love with in farm country I don't like, and I hate suicide being the solution to everything. When Willis started killing everybody like a superhero, I thought "'one man did it by himself' - maybe he's actually the Rainmaker?" That would have been interesting. There were any number of possible resolutions far more interesting than what happened, which was basically THE most standard and derivative possible ending.

I don't ever again want to see a male character being rehabilitated by a kind single mother and her kid who all wind up falling for each other. Come on.

And yea, after Gordon-Levitt's suicide everything should have basically gone back to normal. There should now have been no incidents at the farmhouse.

I didn't expect to like it that much at all. Everything just worked. Everything. An absolute blast to watch, haven't experienced this in a while. Unless I'm forgetting something my favorite scifi since Minority Report. Possibly missing a few.

Let Gina watch a little gem about some avenging altar boys.

Seriously, though, it really is scary.

Looking forward to the bewildered reactions.
So far for my class: La Jetee, The Passion of Joan of Arc, In the Mood for Love, and this week, Days of Heaven.

Dom, I love to point out to them the scene in Mood when they go to dinner, and Maggie Cheung wears at least three different dresses (possibly four). Almost no one spots the change in costumes, so I get to call them "dumb ****s."

I assigned those four films above on Monday. I just received an email from one of the students who is attempting to watch I Am Love. Here's how the exchange went:

*******

Mr. Biondi,

How am I supposed to watch this movie when it's another language! I only speak English.

Gina,

Yes, the film is in Italian. But I'm pretty sure it's subtitled.

Mr. Biondi,

What does that mean?

Gina,

See those English words on the bottom of the screen when someone is speaking? That is the translation of the dialog from Italian to English. It's there so people who do not speak Italian (like us) can still understand and enjoy the movie.

Mr. Biondi,

YOU MEAN I HAVE TO READ THE WHOLE MOVIE!!!

******

I considered many responses in reply, and even typed some out. I finally settled on this:

Gina,

Yes.

*******

I haven't heard back from her.
"Yes, Gina, if by 'read,' you mean 'interpret' then you have to do that. However, in reality, you do not 'read the movie.' Instead, you merely read the subtitles as you watch the movie. Although this may seem, at first, like an impossibly difficult task, with a bit of practice, you'll get quite good at this."

Or, as I would say, "Yes, you dumb ****."

it's not the same scene. they just start to go to dinner together often, and at the same restaurant. tony leung's tie is different too. in one of the iterations of the dinner, she asks him, "why did you call me at the office today?"--then, in what seems like the cab ride home, she asks, "why didn't you call me today?"

Well, she does have a massive rack. It goes with her massive ass.

Tl;dr

Okay, I'll admit, Dominic did have me stumped for a second. I first thought those films must be some variation of pornos (given his history, erm). After all:

"In the Mood For Love", "Hunger", "Certified Copy", and "I Am Love."

So then, when it actually looked legit, I was thinking, "Okay, this must be a romance cinema class at UNLV, no other non-junior college would have a class that stupid, and no other non-junior college besides porno college would possibly hire Dominic."

Then he said it was UoPX. So I figured, yeah, an online college (heh).

But then he said Gina wasn't hot. So I tried to justify it by thinking he was using some kind of webcam program for his class. Oh, but then he said she had wide load. WTF? He is teaching an actual live class? What kind of college would hire...? No, just forget it, there is no way I can make this more strange than the fiction or fact then it already is.

I'm watching Zulu tonight.

Keep this on-topic.

Cliffs: ignore anything Dominic has to say

Oww, my head hurts. Men should just stand there and look good, or screw in pornos, not try to actually talk or reason

Did I mention I'm watching Zulu tonight?

j/k Dom, you know I love you.

Watched Cabin in the Woods tonight. Had a lot of fun watching it. It wasn't quite as good as I was expecting, but it was still pretty good. Left my sofa happy. Then I got food and was even happier.

Watched it last night, pretty much the same reaction here. Not great, but creative and original and fun and all that counts for something.

I must be the only one who thought Cabin was essentially awful.
