Moon - Another great movie. Students have mixed opinions because they have **** taste in movies.

Problem is that I get to show them for my classes all this week, meaning that I have to watch each movie at least 5 times within the week.
Can't you show different movies to each class?

It's a bit rough to find interesting movies hardcoded with both Chinese and English subtitles that are less than 90 minutes long. The software on the classroom PC doesn't allow for separate subtitle files.

Moon is a largely unheard of, underrated film. Here's the official movie trailer:

Gentleman Jim

Rather fun and heavily fictionised account of the life of Gentleman Jim Corbett, one of the first world champion heavyweight boxers. A nearly perfect role for Errol Flynn, with some excellent character actors throughout.

78/100

I watched fantastic mr fox last week and really enjoyed it. I am a bit surprised that chinese students enjoyed it though. Really interesting.

I have never heard of moon before ill have to check it out.

re looper

Spoiler:
yeah. Just watched an interview with Rian Johnson. Basically he says they have to be sent back to be killed (an issue many here had) because once killed in the future they would set off an alarm or whatever since everyone is tracked.

The wife wasn't supposed to be killed that is a huge **** up. Also why they burned down the house.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" is a warm hug on a cool autumn day. I was grinning ear to ear the entire film. The trailer is obnoxious though, spoilers galore!

Well over 90% of the students I teach or have taught have horrible taste in movies, Chinese or otherwise. Their taste resembles that of a young teenager rather than a genuine adult.

I have found that practically all of my students, regardless of gender, are put off by any movie without a clear and happy ending. One of my students said that this was because Chinese people highly value harmony and balance in life. Sad movies do not offer that type of satisfaction.

Anyway, the more advanced English students enjoyed 'The Fantastic Mr. Fox' far more than the low-level students I teach. Some of the latter fell asleep during the movie. Then again, they are largely unmotivated to start with. The former were not only wide awake, but laughing as well. The only advanced students who disliked it were the types who like guns and swords in all of their films and view cartoons as childish. Ironically, I would wager that these students watch Bleach, One Piece, or Naruto in their spare time.

Due to the lack of a concrete, happy ending, Moon received at best mixed results. Also, there was no female lead character and of course no cheesy romantic elements involved which probably put them off.

Part 2 is even better, especially when she infiltrates the government agency in order to steal the nuclear device.

looper - best film i have seen in a while , real enjoyable
10-10-2012 , 03:33 PM
I think just about every chinese movie i have seen has ended with all or all but one main character dead at the end.

That makes sense about the students. I enjoyed the film but i thought a lot of the films humor would be lost to an esl student. Well that goes for really any dry film. Bi guess theres a lot of funny animation to make up for it though.

I just watched brick after reading about it itt. Mind blown. Such a bizarre movie but i loved every minute.

Looper - Good, 7/10
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - Found it extremly boring, 1/10
That's My Boy - Ok movie to watch if u dont have anything else to do, 6/10

Iron Sky

Nazis come back from the moon. The spaceships in this look terrific, and have a steampunk vibe. Great job done by lead actress. Pretty good for such an obvious 'plot in 5 words' movie.

These are such overlooked and amazing films.

In fact, I am going to queue them up again right now. Thanks.

The ending of Manon des Sources is magnificent and Emmanuelle Beart is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen as Manon.

There's a couple of other French films from around the same(ish) time called 'La Gloire de mon Pere' and 'La Chateua de ma Mer' that are also worth watching and evoke in the same way.

In more miserable news I was forced to watch Prometheus again tonight. It was still terrible. 4/10 because it looked nice.

Got Zardoz and Northfolk coming next - anybody know if Northfolk is any good (it seemed interesting enough)?

kinda surprised at the universal praise looper is getting. good film, acting, jgl makeup really impressed me but just overall it's just good, not great. felt like the premise could have worked just fine without all the tk stuff.

Saw Scream 4 DVR'ed off of Showtime. Not half bad. Worth watching at least the first 10 minutes if you can catch it. It's a fun intro.

With both Looper and Brick (also directed by Rian Johnson), I feel like the praise is based more on the ideas of the films rather than the films themselves. Brick - a high school noir with hardboiled dialogue? Awesome! A++! But in reality? I didn't think it was so hot. The concept is incredibly appealing though and it almost feels like people are obliged to pretend they think it's amazing.

Looper - gritty time travel movie with Hollywood aesthetics and actors but an intelligent, "indie" undertone? Fantastic! But the execution? Eh.

Nah, Brick I don't particularity remember.
