Awesome hugeness and coolness.
I seem to have traveled through a black hole into bizarro-universe. How do I get home?

Interesting that no one brought up The Shining during the horror discussion. I think it's a bit overrated myself, but I'm just sayin'.

You can't possibly not enjoy it. It is impossible. You'd have to be a stone.

The Bone Collector (1999)

Worst fight scene of all time and M. Night Shyamalan ending.

Grade: D-

Yes! Glad I'm not alone! The action moves nicely and some great monster fights.

I don't think we're in Kansas any more.

Not that I don't doubt that this is fun movie experience. But after months of more or less just lurking this thread for movie opinion, you've clearly stood out as having a certain taste that would seem like you never in a million years would enjoy a film such as this.

But I do happen to respect your taste quite a bit, amongst quite a few others, so, maybe just maybe... I'll check this out. Or perhaps I'll go watch something like Taxi Driver or Raging Bull, which I know you'll approve of

GHOST PROTOCAL -- what happened to the IMF franchise? Disappointed in the overall experience. Biggest plus were the costars.

Finally watched Following Christopher Nolan's first film. Not sure why I waited so long to watch it, it's quite good. A story that makes me want to watch it again immediately following my first viewing.

Sometimes, I want a frisee salad, a delicious plate of duck confit or sauteed sweetbreads, a cheese board, and a Calvados to finish.

Last night, I wanted a salad bar, some sliders, three 22 ounce beers, and a tub of popcorn.

Done right, either can be very good.

And by the way, I just went and checked some reviews, and it seems the movie is almost universally reviled.

I honestly don't understand it. Did these people expect some brilliant script and a bunch of....emoting?

It's a movie where a bunch of cool CGI monsters attack people. It's big, and it's pretty to look at, and it's actually fun.

I guess nobody goes to see fireworks anymore.

Ugh, I hate this view especially from someone like you. Why is there an idea, only for film, that mediocrity is ok and as long as there is CGI its fine to ignore script? You would never hear someone say, "sure the effects were terrible but the script was great".

There is this bizzare idea in our culture that CGI and a strong narrative are mutually exclusive. It drives me nuts. It's not ok to be a terrible film just because lots of stuff blows up!

It's not a terrible film. It's actually fairly solidly written and acted. It's just that the real star of the film is the visual aspect.

And just as an exercise to see how wrong RT reviews are (I never actually realized for some reason, as I have never checked them before), I went and saw that the movie that was on my TV this morning when I turned it on, In and Out, an abysmal film about (gasp!) homosexuality starring a virtual barrage of Hollywood celebrities and quite possible the worst piece of crap I have seen in a long time, has a 73% rating.

Put it this way: I have seen bits of the movies you're talking about, and I know (hell, EVERYONE knows, how could they NOT?) how you feel about them. I don't think this is one of those movies.

What's driving you nuts is that you don't seem to understand that your subjective view of what makes a movie "good" is not a universally accepted objective standard.

And by the way, it's not "only for film."

Sometimes, I want to hear Abba.

Sometimes, I love a Quarter Pounder with cheese.

Sometimes, I really enjoy playing a municipal golf course.

Sometimes, missionary position is just fine.

Sometimes, driving my wife's Lexus seems OK, even when my car is sitting in the driveway.

But hey, maybe I am just crazy.
04-20-2012 , 02:37 PM
I agree with Rushmore on this. I, too, sometimes like cheesy, SFX-driven movies that aren't particularly note-worthy. Not every film has to be Tarkovsky or Kubrick. Ed Wood has a place in my heart, too.

...And wait a sec...driving your wife's Lexus is slumming?? What car do you have??
04-20-2012 , 02:59 PM
Rushmore is the Mit Romney of the forum, he can relate to "regular folk" who have to drive a Lexus .
04-20-2012 , 04:18 PM
You guys get jokes. That's great.

I drive an Infiniti M35 (which I prefer to my wife's Lexus).

But it was still a joke.

J. Edgar - The make-up is horrendous, it distracts from everything else. It honestly baffles me how bad it looks. What the ****. 4/10

Into the Abyss
is much better than The Cave of Forgotten Dreams, quite some characters Herzog finds here while also telling an interesting story. 8/10

I figured people were over-exaggerating how bad the makeup was seeing as it obviously wasn't low budget and had leo/clint, but wow it was bad!

You have to wonder how the people involved in it said "yea, that looks good, wrap it up!"

Couldn't take my eyes off this for a minute.

Was really struck by how the concept of time becomes so warped in prison that the father of one of the defendants gets his centuries mixed up.
