DW, you mean like a Gucci or Burberry or something? Do you have any specific recommendations in the < $500 range? My brother and I really aren't close at all and he won't spend anywhere near $500 on me so I'm not going to get him a $1k watch. I know what you're saying but as a watch enthusiast I would feel guilty about making a purchase like that. Not to mention I don't think designer watches look great. I'd rather he get complimented on his watch by his successful boss at work (when he gets one) than some lame friend of his who is wearing a Fossil.

He's 17 though right, won't it be a good few years before he has a successful boss?

And yeah, i was talking about something like that, they all generally retail under 500 and people who've had them have said they've gotten a lot of compliments on them.

Except $495 for a quartz movement. I like the watch, but wish there was a hand wind or auto movement in there.

Help!

I'm looking to BUY a DECENT watch ($500 - $2000) and I don't want to be taken to the cleaners. I know nothing about watches, the brands, quality, what to look for. I'm not looking for any thing ultra ghetto 'blingy' . I have a clunky Horroswiss right now that has a compass which is cool but it's not stylish at all.
I know a lot about photography brands but not watches. So what watch brands are considered the best?

I will mainly be wearing the watch when playing poker since I don't do much else in public.

I have been browsing some from Corum, Raymond Weil, & Jacob & co

If you're maining wearing it while playing poker then obviously you should get a breitling.

is your intention to "look cool to poker players while out" or to have a watch you like? if the latter, you probably want to help define what you like. don't worry, we know what douchehat poker players are likely to be impressed by, and as above, it's mostly breitlings.

lol. Of course I'd like to have something nice that's mildly impressive but not excessive. I think having something that wasn't a fake like my Rolex might elevate my confidence and self esteem too. Don't need something covered with diamonds that shots THIS IS EXPENSIVE BIATCH! I don't want someone to befriend me because I have an expensive watch but I'd like something stylish that makes me feel good about wearing it. You probably wear nice clothes but not a $500 shirt.

Don't like the clunky square stuff or brown bands. I don't wear a lot of suits. Mostly a t-shirt and jeans guy with the occasional collared shirt. I've never put much thought in to a watch purchase. Are there any that come to mind with working compass ? Its nice when I'm lost.

IIRC breitling does sell a compass add-on for some models that basically replaces some of the links in the bracelet.

I really like the top Tsovet. Is there a specific "type" that it falls under? I am so nub that I have no idea what to use for a search keyword.

Just curious, where are you when you typically become lost to the point you need a compass to find your way back?

In this thread there a links to sites with excellent watches. What anyone likes is really a matter of personal taste. For example, I couldn't wear a Horoswiss with a compass, all those hands would drive me nuts:

I believe the technical term is "fugly."

Do a google search for "aircraft gauge watch", there's 700k web hits, 98k image hits.

hey guys i'm thinking about one of these ball fireman watches. they retail at around 1k. what do you think?

I am not at all adverse to bright colors on a watch but I think they look good on a sportier watch. It looks a little odd on what would otherwise be a normal (but very nice) watch IMHO.

I'm a big noob when it comes to buying expensive things and need some help here. I'm buying my mother a watch for xmas and the store has it listed for 27k. Now they said they will give me a 15% discount, but I really feel I could get more than this. Other relevant info:
-I'm paying in cash.
-The watch is a cartier watch, and the store that sells it is called cartier, so I'm assuming its directly from the manufacturer?

Is the 15% reasonable? Should I push for more at the store?

Thanks for the help.
