Had a question re: New Years Eve dress..going to a party at a hotel where the dress code is 'upscale attire required', with a suggestion of suits or nice jeans w/ blazer and dress shoes.

Been awhile since I've had to wear a suit, and I've lost a bunch of weight since then to the point where my suit looks kinda ridiculous now that I've tried it on, with the jacket being pretty boxy-looking and the pants being way too big in the waist.

I have a navy blazer that would work fine, and I was thinking of pairing that with these cotton/linen pants from J Crew.

I know linen is typically more geared towards summer, but with 4k+ people at this party I'm guessing it'll be hot and lighter material would be nice. So would I be underdressed with those pants, a navy blazer, white button up and the tie on the far left below along with brown dress shoes? Most of the guys I've seen in pictures at this event previously have full suits but if this works it would save me the hassle of picking something up.

Tom,

Go with dark denim over linen. You live in Montreal. The horror of the faux pas! All of your tie options look solid. Go with the grey or the bowtie. Darker colours are favored for evening wear.

Oops..haven't been on 2p2 much lately, was only in Montreal for the summer to play poker, back in the US and will be in Chicago for NYE. But assuming the point stands, looks like I gotta do a little shopping. Meh..ty for the help though!

I would say go with the bow-tie, but I generally despise a jacket without matching pants, so a navy jacket, white pants, and then a bow-tie that also matches neither seems like too much for me. Regardless, just know that, so long as the fit is right, standing up straight with confidence will allow you to wear almost anything you want.

For example, white pants in winter is a common "no-no", but if they fit you well, and the jacket isn't big on you, you'll look like a boss. I'd just recommend that your shirt be a light color to match the lightness of your pants. Then the darker tie would go with your jacket. Also, some walnut/brown shoes would look better than black, imo.

EDIT:

Just don't wear a white shirt.

navy + white pans seems kind of sailor-ish to me

+1

And a white shirt would be horrible as well. +100 on dark denim.

i really wanted to encourage you to wear those pants for my own entertainment but it appears its too late.

do NOT wear those pants if you don't want to look like a fool.

wear black shoes. and a charcoal or black blazer would be infinitely better than navy. with dark jeans. and if not jeans, wear a full suit.

none of what you posted really qualifies for "upscale (evening) attire"

I would only wear black shoes if I'm wearing a black blazer, which I wouldn't do. unless it was specifically an evening/party blazer, and it would be be dark jeans. but I don't own a black blazer.

I hate wearing a business suit to any fun event. it is after all a business suit. it's why people wear tuxedos at night to social events, though this event doesn't seem that fancy.

a nazy blazer + jeans or flannel pants or something is much better

I don't either actually, the reason I'm asking is that my old roommate left a pretty huge pile of these and I'm seriously wondering how common it is for heterosexual males to buy them.

From a traditional standpoint there is absolutely nothing long with a navy blazer. It is a quinessential item in mens' wear for a reason.

Also, white shirts are fresh, day or night. Don't shy away from the basics. I've just ordered eight spread collar white shirts. They go with everything. Now, I'm not saying what you should do, just sharing what's conservative.

Throw what I said out the window, including the linen pants, make sure your clothes fit well, that is paramont. Happy New Year!

There is no problem with his choice in magazines as a hetrosexual, the shortcoming is the magazines are a product of the advertising, meeting the needs of those companies paying for advertising.

The Rake is closer to independent in that regard. Mass-market clothing swells the pockets of the producers often leaving the consumer with a poor conception of what their focus should be on- slim-fit not the technical details of the attire.

What's a good tie to wear with the below shirt? I was thinking solid black?

Solid black doesn't really go with anything but white IMO. Stick with something navy.

Shop at Saks and Bloomingdales. Look for attire that fits - don't seek out fashionable clothing.

Anyone have any suggestions for taking care of shoes? I'm in Chicago and am going to be dealing with a lot of salt/snow/etc. Do you guys use any waterproofing products or anything of that nature?

You can use vinegar to remove salt stains. Afterward, it is necessary to use Lexol (conditioners) to replace oils. Afterward, to waterproof and seal in colours use Saphir. (Leffot in NYC is a distributor of said product).

What's the best method for rolling up sleeves on a long-sleeve button down? 2 rolls @ cuff width? Better to roll it all the way above the elbow or below?

Never at cuff width unless your shirt has really narrow cuffs. The goal in rolling up your sleeves is to make it look like you don't give a **** about how it looks even though you really do. Don't roll it too wide or else it looks too neat and lifeless. Don't roll it too skinny or else it ends up like a thick rope of fabric.

Difficult question. AFAIK Beau Brummell never tackled it, Wilde refused to touch the matter and I have scoured the works of John Ruskin and have come up empty. Luckily, the genius that is F. Corbera has fearlessly sought to answer this most important of sartorial questions. I think we will all agree that he has succeeded where lesser men have failed.

I usually start rolling with the cuff width, but as stated, that's usually too wide, so after the second roll, I fold it in half.
