Finally played Dixit, was a big hit with the family over Thanksgiving weekend with lots of non-gamers loving it. I mean I think I'd love games like Mage Knight or whatever but it's nice to have games that the casual fans will love and can pick up so quickly that still have depth and fun to them as well.

Yeah Dixit always works during the xmas season. I might actually get #2 for some extra cards. Pricey but soooo prettey.

I soloed the Arkham Horror ase gamethe other day on a whim. Been a bit since I played...had to consult the rules more than I expected heh

I'm always on the lookout for casual games because they play with many. 7 Wonders, Dominion, Dixit and Ticket to Ride probably get the most playing time (Alhambra and Carrcasonne afer that, feels like Escape will go here as well). Recently introduced Rattus and it seems like that could establish itself.

Dixit is awesome for holidays. I am also quite fond of wits and wagers for family stuff. This xmas, I'm getting pitchcar for my nephew. I haven't played myself, but based on what I've heard, I expect it to be popular with him and also with adults.

clown, another casual game that is great with up to 10 is resistance

What's better, dominion or 7 wonders?

Anyone here played lords of waterdeep? How about summoner wars?

dominion is better

lately i've enjoyed 7 wonders more than dominion, but i suspect its a function of not having played nearly as much of it. i really don't think you can go wrong with either.

lords of waterdeep is a lot of fun and a good light worker placement game.

haven't played summoner wars

Without question the right answer between Dominion and 7 Wonders, is both. Both are quite awesome.

Dominion better with fewer people. 7 Wonders better with more people. Both elite games.

I like 7 Wonders more. Depends on who you play with etc. Dominion you tend to be too focused on doing your stuff and the interaction is really lacking with many card combos.
7 wonders at least has the passing around cards and military aspects

I think especially for new players 7 Wonders takes the cake. I think the goals are a little more concrete and playing at the same time also is a nice aspect.

Interesting, how does it compare to Stone Age? I was planning on making Stone Age the xmas champion I probably still will because the theme is very family friendly but I'd be interested in a comparison.

Stone Age is probably friendlier for new players. The theme is very family friendly while Lords of Waterdeep has the D&D theme which may scare some people off. As far as game play, I found Stone Age's play a little bit simpler. Lords of Waterdeep has more choices including the chance to build buildings that expand the choices further. Though its probably splitting hairs on that. They are ranked 31 and 33 on BGG and both have an average weight of 2.5, so you are looking at splitting hairs here.

Dominion is the best game hands down IMO (other than spades, bridge, chess)

I love them and think they are great, but they certainly are not immediately necessary. I found that I played the base game until I had gotten good at that and then added gathering storm until i felt like i had that mastered and i am now also using rebel vs imperium.

Also its worth noting that the expansions come in essentially two arcs that build. There is the rebel/imperium arc of expansions that includes gathering storm, rebel vs imperium and brink of war. They all fit together really well. The new expansion, alien artifacts, is starting a new arc of expansions meant to go with the base game but not the rebel/imperium expansions.

My daughter liked Gulo Gulo when she was around 6. But I thought it was kind of boring for adults.

A game we both liked though was Carcassonne. But it possibly depends on how old they are. The game is for 8 and up, but I'm pretty sure I got it when my daughter was 7. I made the mistake of getting the Hunters and Gatherers version. Possibly easier to understand for that age, but none of the expansions work for it. Would have been better off getting the regular game and getting expansions later.

I can barely understand Carcassone and I'm an adult.

Lol, I tried playing Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers with my wife once. By halfway through the game, she just had our daughter take her turn for her.

But it's not impossible for kids to understand. They should just have a little patience. That reminds me, it's been a while since I played it. Might have to break the game open tonight.

I'm so baffled that you can simultaneously say this and think power grid is relatively simple. I'm not saying power grid is super complex, but it definitely has a lot more going on than Carcassonne.

Carc not hard to understand imo. I have tower expansion and pigs/farmer expansion. Not sure if those are the actual names but something like that.
