Yeah Tom mentioned the Wheaton show a couple of times during his top 100 (some dude speculated about games going up that were on his show calling it the Wheaton-effect and it turned into a strange running joke). That's why I checked it out, it's kind of produced like a poker show imo but pretty well done. Small World was the first one I watched as well, mostly because it wasn't as popular as I expected last xmas...I was pretty amazed that day9 was on the show heh

Decent entertainment he basically plays games with (often minor/internet only) celebs. Also watched the Dixit one...Parker from Leverage = hot.

Played a couple of solo games of Pandemic to test the expansion. Gotta agree with the general consensus that it's pretty cool.

How strange is it that I think the coolest thing about it is the "petri dishes". Didn't know about that and was legit happy when I saw then heh

I also bought David&Goliath with my last order because Tom called it "the ultimate trick taking game" in his top100 and it was cheap enough. I'll test it soonish but I have some doubts that it'll be better than classics like Bridge, Skat, Doppelkopf. If it's as good or slightly worse than either I'm more thanhappy though

I just played Trajan for the first time tonight. It is really freaking good if you like medium-heavy euros. Its typical of Stefan Feld in that there is no possible way to do everything you want to, but it doesn't really feel punishing like Year of the Dragon, you are choosing between a bunch of good options (or the occasional frustration that you have shut yourself out of options you want because the role selection is based on mancala). There are so 6 different roles that each have their own way to generate victory points and you can functionally base a strategy around any combination of 2 or 3 of them.

Try it with a regular deck of cards.

The use of the Mancala board in Trajan is elite. It is fairly high on my wish list.

I LOVE oh hell, aka Elevators!

I'm biased toward trick taking games from my spades background. I bet some of the bridge players here would give some actual competition, as it's hard to find people good at estimating and taking tricks.

Even harder is finding those who are good at taking tricks who also understand probability and how to adjust based on # cards/players in each hand

If there is an oh hell online somewhere, let me know if you wanna get a POG game going

8 player hearts is fun, too

Use 2 decks and if 2 of a card are played on same trick, they cancel each other out and can't win the trick

So you can lead out Q of spades if you think other player with Q will play theirs

i made up a game (i think) think mahjong but with playing cards

i just spread the cards across the table (face up) trying not leave any card covered by more than 2 cards. you can make an orderly fashion but i prefer just randomly spreading the cards. you can play with 2-4 players. randomly choose someone to start. each player in turn picks up a card that is on top of the spread out cards (if any card is on top of it its off limits). each players picks up a card until every player has seven cards. best 5 card hand wins. conceal your cards after you pick them up to conceal your hand.

various additional optional rules.

keep some cards on the bottom layer turned upside down. once the cards on top of it are removed it gets flipped face side up.

please play with a friend(s) and let me know what you think. or various rules you added to it. if i didnt explain it well enough feel free to ask questions and ill answer in MSpaint form if need be.

There's several versions of Oh Hell available for iOS. Not sure if they are multiplayer or just against the computer. I downloaded a trial version called Niggle, but it's not multiplayer.

There's a version of Wizard for the iOS, but it crashes on the last round, for some reason. And there's no trial version either, so I'm out $4 for a game that doesn't work. It's also not multiplayer, just against the computer.

ZOMG this was the best game ever. What really sucks is something like

Qs
Qs
3s
5s
3s
club
2s
5s

and you win the trick with the two.

playtested some prototype games tonight. There was some really cool stuff there. Not great games yet, but a few had that potential. This made me think I may want to try my had at game design.

Hey Nich, what's the best way to learn how to play Spades? Do you have a book or website recommendation?

You have played other trick taking games before tho, like oh hell.

Any others? Euchre, Bridge, Pinochle?

Do you know the rules of spades?

I know the rules, but have never played other trick taking games.

Not really looking to become super competitive or anything, just want to know the basics of the thought process behind trick taking and bidding so I can teach my family how to play.
