Looking for a 2+ player board/card game. We haven't dove very deep into board games yet but enjoy playing risk and strategy games the most.

Any suggestions?

That covers a lot of ground, especially the "2+ players"

Do you want something that is good for 4, but could be played with 2? Or something that is great for 2 or 3?

Also "risk and strategy games" is quite comprehensive too. What specific other games do you like?

Looking for the more 2-4 range. I probably can only find enough people for 3 or 4 but would like to be able to play with 2 even if it's not as fun. I honestly haven't played a great variety of board games. I enjoy the classic like risk, monolopy, life, and stuff like that. I have been more into card games like euchre, poker, and a great variety like that.

I'd give Dominion a shot. It's most fun with 2, good with 3, not good with 4 but still playable.

BTW social deduction fans might want to take notice of a game ending on kickstarter in a day called "secret hitler", by the maker of CAH, looks fun.

Played Codenames with friends (spreadsheet version). Great game. Customisable. Add words, change the grid size, three teams, two assassins etc. Might buy the physical game for my parents I think they will like it.

codenames is fun

i got that recently as well as a game called Concept, which is slightly similar but much less structured

More detail on Concept? I have always been intrigued but never knew anyone to play it or own it.

This this this. Too often Dominion is used as a gateway game IMO because it reached a pretty high level of popularity above a lot of other great games. But people need to realize that to buy all the physical copies it is a huge cost for what really is a 2-3 player game. Most attack cards IMO make the game unplayable with 4, and sometimes 3 as well.

Base dominion is unplayable by itself. You need at least one expansion (intrigue was mentioned). Game is flawed once you realize the strategy.

Race for the galaxy infinitely better. Settlers of Catan for 3-4 if you've never played.

I guess the best way to describe it would be its like charades as a board game.

You have to communicate a secret word or phrase to the other team by only using icons and pictures found on the game board. There are 5 'concept' figurines that you place on one of the icons to give the other team an overarching idea of what describes your word.

For example, i played yesterday and my word was Finding Nemo. So, i put the largest concept figurine on the movies icon, so everyone knows my word is a movie. I then put the same color cube on the animal icon, and then on the wet/water icon (color cubes represent ideas related to the same concept). I then started a new concept (different color figurine) and placed it on animal, and placed cubes on orange and white. So, they knew it was a movie about an animal in water. And that there was a white and orange animal

Im terrible at explaining but thats the best i can do. Its a super fun easy going game, and really challenges people's creativity in coming up with multiple related concepts to describe something

Any thoughts on Dead of Winter for a group of 3 including a 13 year old girl? We picked her up Pandemic for Christmas and think she will like it

I own them both and prefer Concept. Played Codenames a bunch over the holidays. It's fun but kind of gets old imo.
Concept we don't even play it a lot of the times but just put it out there to walk by and build a couple of concepts...pretty fun. Or often we'll do "wanna guess 10 concepts..let us gogogo"

You basically have a big board with fixed icons and cards you need to explain by placing stuff on them.
So "Yoda" you could do something like "Movie" + "Small (arrow down)" + "Green" + "Talk" + "Arrow backwards"
America you could do "Red"+"White"+"Blue" :P

Some are pretty tough and require creativity on the concept builder and the guesser's part. After you play it a bunch you kind of learn how people think (and possibly form memories/internalize stuff)

Base Dominion is not unplayable by itself. It is not a great set - some of the cards are worthless - but the good news is that most new players won't realize this until they're through several games and have determined whether or not they like the game. I would never recommend that someone get Intrigue first - if they're good enough at games to immediately grasp why Base has issues, they're also potentially going to find Intrigue games long and possibly boring.

Race for The Galaxy is way more complicated - I love that game but it scratches a slightly different itch than Dominion and is not a game I would try to teach people who are generally unfamiliar with complex board/card games.

i) Did you play it with the same set of people??
ii) Do you think the limited number of words contributed to the boredom? I played a spreadsheet with way more than 300 words and the opportunity to edit more in. Plus the option to change the size of the grid - a 6 * 6 grid with 3 assassins would probably offer a different angle than the standard 5*5 (Codenames phone apps offer customisable keys).
iii) Which board games don't get old? Is there a game that you (anyone reading) can play 3 hours a night for a week and not get bored of? I can't really think of one. Maybe bridge.

Food Chain Magnate (Great)
Imperios Milenarios (Great)
Mombasa (Very Good)
Nippon (Good)
Signorie (Good)

Some of the good-to-great new games we've been playing.

Cult of the new.

I'll say it now, I think Pandemic (regular and legacy) sucks and total recency bias to have it that high, that quick. In fact I'll go so far as to say co-op games suck in general. Have yet to have a truly rewarding experience playing a co-op game.

a one time play thru co-op game

It's not really a "one-time" play though. You get something like 12-24 plays out of it and the game changes and morphs as you play it each time, eventually at the end rendering the game finished and unplayable again. I guess liken it to a campaign of plays, then the board game can be turfed.

I've played Risk Legacy so it is the same premise as that. I don't know why bgg droolers have decided P:L is worthy of such high praise. It pales in comparison to the rest of the games in the top 25.

Yes I'm salty about Pandemic.
