I just got a new laptop (HP ENVY) and I've yet to find a convenient way of scrolling in the web browser. My old laptop had "edgemotion" where moving up and down on the far right of the touch pad allowed for web browser scrolling. AFAIK this laptop doesn't have that. Can I make my touch pad do what my old laptop used to? Also, I find when I accidentally combine some sequence of clicking my touch pad it goes into scroll mode, but I can't seem to duplicate it on command. Thoughts?

Heads up to those who have Usenet access. Newzbin has re-opened registration. You don't need an invite anymore to sign up.

this would be a AMD Phenom II 810 Quad Core 2.60GHz, 4 gb memory, 500 gb hard drive, 22x dvd burner, windows 7 pro 64 bit, 22" LCD Monitor, and a 1gb ASUS GT220 graphics card......2 year warranty, $699.99 plus tax....or you can go with a 20" lcd and save $40.00...this would require a minimum of $250.00 down ...thx Bill

not sure of monitor specs or usb ports and all that stuff and will have to go check it out in person....

is this a solid price/setup?
04-19-2010 , 03:21 PM
this guy is building a computer to fit my price range and needs so I can change anything that I need to right now, these initial specs are pretty much a rough draft
04-19-2010 , 04:50 PM
Its not bad, you could probably get a better deal at Dell Outlet though.

I want to learn some web design. I know basically nothing about it at the moment. What is the best way to learn? Should I be looking for college courses to take? Is it something that can be self taught through books/online resources? Didn't know if this was the correct forum for this post so thought I'd try the NC thread instead of starting a new thread. Thanks for any tips!

(background: econ grad student, undergrad major in actuarial science and econ, minor in finance and math, only programing experience was a course in fortran, worked as an actuarial analyst for two years so I am very good with excel/access and databases)

Thanks. My goal is to be able to create websites, I have no idea how much time is needed to learn to do this well. I have an idea for a website I would like to work on but have no clue if it is realistically something I could do by myself w/o hiring/working with someone else.

Someone recommend me a good laptop for poker, somewhere in the 600-800$ range.
04-20-2010 , 09:39 PM
daveT has taken it on himself to actually learn web technologies in detail. Depending on what you actually want to do and your end goal, you can approach it different ways. If you are more interested in content than the design, you can setup wordpress, grab a theme and start a blog with very little effort. If you want a custom theme and want to know everything that is going on under the covers, you can spend lots of time designing and not actually make the site publicly viewable for some time.

McAfee exposed for the destructive virus it is (ok not really a virus but this is a majr f-up).

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36694120

My company got hit by this. It was fun.

I've always said McAfee isn't much better than a rogue AV.

pretty standard.

For the last 3 years or so, I've been running SpyBot S&D and Malwarebytes every couple of weeks. Yesterday I ran them both again, and it seemed that SpyBot has become pretty bloated and takes a long time to complete. Is there any point in running them both now? Does one of them do something the other doesn't?

Thanks for any information.

subject: recent news regarding Apple vs Adobe

i don't actually own any apple products, but have always planned on getting an iPhone (once att addressed the network issues) or maybe an iPad. but with what they're doing to adobe lately, i'm inclined to never buy their products. am i just being silly, or are their efforts to restrict programmers to their preferred coding languages and to promote the idea of "iPad-ready sites" (taken from pcworld, today) as bad a i feel they are??? you can do whatever you want with your hardware, but when you start trying to force me to certain content/providers and make it unusually difficult for people to write programs for your hardware, you can eat a bag of dicks.

is that reasonable?

Since I occasionally have tables at the bottom of the screen, this can make the taskbar pop up and cover up the table action buttons. Is there a way to disable this unhiding of the taskbar when a window becomes active or selected?
no, but you can drag your auto hide taskbar to the side of your monitor, so that it is vertical. yw.

edit (looked at the screenshot): you need a new video card or a new cooling solution for your video card. afaik, your processor temps are pretty good for intel cpus. otoh your mobo temp is pretty high. i don't know how hot intel motherboards run, but that seems excessive. you probably need another (or bigger) exhaust fan, maybe even intake.

what case do you have, how many fans and where are they?

as the poster above said, you might be able to beat the price. i'm running dual core with 3.15 gb or RAM at 2.4GHz, and i twelve table with no problems, but i've also tweaked the hell out of my database and put it on a ssd. the bottleneck is going to be the hard drive, and how much your machine needs to use it instead of memory.

once your db gets large you're gonna have to get a better solution than a single 500 gb hard drive, so i'd say pass unless you're cool with replacing it/parts of it in a couple years.

zeebo, tyvm for the media suggestions, i've tried 3 brands that have all pretty much sucked

No, not really.

There is a long history between Adobe and Apple that has taught Apple not to be dependent on a 3rd party developer. What Apple doesn't want to happen is the store to get filled with all of these cross platform developed apps that exercise a sub-set of the iPhones functionality and interface, then have to wait 2 years for Adobe to update the cross compiler to take advantage of features in a new iPhone OS version. It depends on what side of the "user experience" fence you come down on as to how crappy this move is. Apple is limiting the tools that can be used to develop for the iPad/iPhone to ones it knows will be less likely to provide a crappy user experience. If you aren't a developer it probably won't affect you at all.

You get the same amount of internet on the iPhone or iPad, there are no restrictions to what sites you can go to. Flash doesn't work, but it never has, but Apple doesn't restrict you to "iPad Ready Sites."

Uninstall spybot and replace it with SUPERAntiSpyware.
www.superantispyware.com

MBAM and SAS are both very good. From what I've seen, SAS excels at malicious registry keys.

Good luck with Att fixing the network issues.

And a flash-free web would be a great thing. It is as ****ty as RealPlayer.

thanks for the informative response. i know apple doesn't literally restrict me, but the suggestion that certain sites will work better than the rest because they meet apple's criteria rubbed me the wrong way. the way you describe the issue with the flash platform, it makes sense that apple wouldn't want to be held hostage waiting for an update.

clearly i don't know much about flash, but wow, "as ****ty as realplayer" is really saying something. i thought maybe people used adobe because it was good, not just because it's everywhere.
