USA would struggle to stay out of the second division if they played in the Spanish league.

Hey, good news, the Mexican U-17s are playing Nigeria right now on ESPN3 in an U-17 World Cup game. I'm sure these kids are so good that whoever is El Tri's coach this week should just call them up en masse to use against NZ.

Speaking of Mexican national team managers, does the Mexican federation have one of those cards where if you buy 10, you get one for free like I have at the local burrito place?

Almost all of our starters start for top 10 sides in the major Euro leagues or have before. I don't think anyone said that anyways, but it's probably not untrue.

I saidi thought we'd be mid-table and comfortably clear of relegation on average. Sometimes sweating relegation into Feb and March and sometimes hoping for a euro slot at the same time.

I don't see much of a difference between USA and Everton.

Better strikers, more options at AM, better FBs by miles, better CBs. Yup no difference at all.

With the exception of maybe the top 5 etc, top club sides tend to be better than international sides. The vast majority of the worlds top 20 sides would struggle to finish above Everton in 7th.

USA is probably like Fulham/West Ham/Villa. Not going to get relegated but not finishing top 10 either. Probably make a good cup run.

The three EPL sides represented are Villa, Sunderland and Stoke. All might get top 10 on occasion, but are all mediocre teams.
Other European sides are Rosenberg, Nantes, Anderlecht and Rapid Wien all relatively minor sides with little or no CL football.

Some of those clubs might be top 10 in their leagues but that means **** all. None of the clubs are the types of clubs that attracts the significant tallent.

2 AZ, Tottenham, 2 Everton, Roma, Schalke, Hoffenheim, Nurnburg or Hannover, SKC, la galaxy is probably the first 11. So nothing to write home about but nothing to scoff at. No top tier talent but really few weaknesses if healthy and fairly low drop to the backups other than Landon, deuce and Bradley.

I won't complain about us this next summer unless we don't bring the WIM. Our expectations aren't out of line. We are hoping to have another shot at a RO16 game. And that's not exactly a pipe dream with this crew.

Who is the other player (not Howard) at Everton?

The fundamental problem with US soccer is the inability to see where how mediocre it truly is still. There are one or two players (e.g. Clint Dempsey) on the squad who in their prime were good enough to play for upper mid level European teams. None of their players not in the goal play for teams like Madrid, Barca, Bayern, Milan, Inter, Manchester, etc. There's not even talent there like the talent that plays for teams like Atletico or Valencia. I really don't think they'd be competitive with teams like Real Sociedad, Getafe, Valencia, because their talent level is more like that of Rayo or Celta, and so they'd be struggling to stay out of the second division in Spain. That no one in the USA seems able to realize that they have to look to where it's done right to find models, is part of why the US is perennially under successful in football. Little tiny countries like Sweden field better sides. Sweden is like Alabama big.

Now is not indicative of always. there are many of us who hope that changes in a bit. I'm confident that in 20 or 30 years it will no longer be the case.
