In other news was having this debate with a friend.. would you prefer a perennial playoff team, or one title?

Specifically.. would you prefer if you were to root for a team that would win a title in the middle of x years of never making the playoffs, or one that made the playoffs for x years in a row without winning a title?

Surely there is a point that x is preferred, at what point do you prefer x?

title. its crushing to make the playoffs all the time and never win.

There's no line for x?

So you'd prefer one title in your life and then never make the playoffs again?

who wants to root for a team that makes the playoffs 30 years in a row and never titles. you'd be a laughing stock

As x gets higher, both situations get intolerably ****ty. Uncertainty is really fundamental to being a fan, imo. Both are tolerable for x<=5, titling obviously better.

Not more of a laughing stock than a team that titled 25 years ago but never made the playoffs again.

x=1 the way its asked. I would prefer to win a title every year. I dont really get the question where you have the same variable in both though. It seems like smaller numbers are clearly better for both.

The idea is that you have the same variable in each so you can find, assuming you'd rather have (at some stage) playoffs every year than one title and constant suckage, the specific value of X where the playoffs become better than constant suckage. You're misunderstanding the situation.

So you're basically asking if you would rather be a fan of the Miami Marlins or the post-04 New England Patriots?

watching your team blowing it again in the playoffs for the 31st year in a row would be miserable experience. like being a modern arsenal fan only worse, and for longer.

I would prefer a 10 year playoff run with no title (and then an uncertain future) than 1 title and no other playoffs in 50 years, but that doesn't seem to be the question.

oh ok the wording was imprecise. still easy to tell what he meant. "Surely there's some point at which the perennial playoff team is preferred -- at what value of X does this occur?"

This is why X=X is important. You don't get those 40 years of uncertainty if you're comparing to 50 years of one title. The 40 years are 40 more years of making the playoffs every year and winning 0 titles.

How can you be so nitty? You're the only one that would ever struggle at all to see what I was saying.

How is it clear that hes asking whick point we prefer the perennial playoff team and not which point we prefer the title? Thats why I answered how I did. I think its important to know if the string of playoffs is broken by a title, a year where anything can happen (ie. decided before the season), or missing the playoffs. I would require knowing if the playoff drought with 1 title is broken by an appearance and no title, a year where anything can happen (ie. decided before the season), or a title. The distinctions here would radically alter my answer.

so are you asking what x makes you prefer winning the title or being the playoff team? its still not clear.

yea, ATL has it worse than Cleveland. 1 title in history and a lot more opportunities. Kinda funny we had to beat Cleveland to win that title tho.

if the utility curves intersect, at what X do they intersect? for 99.9% of people whose curves intersect, the utility is going to be higher for title/suck before X and higher for playoff after X. but, if you're different in this regard, you can mention this as well! if your utility curves here don't intersect for some reason, that's a valid response too!

last shot, hope this helps.

how is it remotely clear what direction we are talking about over the inflection point? if this was a test question it would be thrown out 100% of the time. It seems like he is asking "at what x do you prefer A over B?" in this instance there is no way to tell if A is the red or blue. If the answer is never or always then how would you answer?

the question was posed extremely poorly because it used "x" to mean multiple things

this makes no sense

"A) x years over which you have one championship and suck the rest
B) x years over which you are consistently good but no championship

when do you prefer x?"

As a cowboys fan, I'm happy to at least be able to sweat the season even though they break my heart at the end and i wind up soul crushed.

I'd take that over a rams fan.
