I've only spent very short periods of time there. One was a fantastic weekend at UNCC but then again college experiences have tended to be similar wherever in the country I went to them.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, & Beertalk

Texas is tolerable if you live in a city big enough to be diverse and young (so basically Austin, Houston, maybe San Antonio, some people might say Dallas but I wouldn't.) Houston has great food and art museums but the air is gross and public transportation is a farce. Austin has great live music and the hills nearby but is now overcrowded, mostly with annoying white people.

Being 1/2 - 1/3 the cost of the coasts is a big selling point. Would definitely prefer somewhere on the coasts or maybe like Denver-area if money were no object, though.

Bible thumping is an issue if you live in a rural part. If you live in a bigish city or a suburb you don't even notice it. To think maybe seeing an extra church every few miles makes it worth it to pay 300% the price for the same size house is pretty hilarious.

I have been to a few of the midwestern cities through the heart of america for various sports like Des Moines, Omaha, Lincoln, Wichita, etc quite a few times and nothing has been near as bad as Tulsa and Oklahoma City. They were far worse than all the other cities I thought. I like Kansas City just fine having lived there most of my life but I think St. Louis is pretty objectively a lot better city ignoring certain areas that are terrible.

Yeah I went to Ft. Worth for a bowl game and it wasn't too bad. Didn't exactly get the full experience but found a whiskey bar near TCU I liked.

Do you know a little greasy spoon diner called "The Mediterranean Cafe" in Asheville? My uber-rich Aunt and Uncle own a newly renovated condo in the building next to it (with the art gallery in the lower floors). I've stayed there a few times and I have to say, it's about the most boring town I've ever visited.

Great place if you're into art or daily hippie protests tho.

im pretty well traveled, ya i live in a laughingstock city but watever.

that said, i would never be caught dead in texas, florida, vegas or phoenix. ive spent decent time in each place.

florida is old ppl and meth and alligators. and horrible heat and humidity. and flat. and strip malls.

phoenix is a little better but pretty much the same.

vegas ive only seen as a tourist and ive just been there too many times. mebbe its better living there and avoiding the strip and all that. kinda doubt it. flat, sand, heat.

denver is amazing i would move in a second.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, & Beertalk

ive only had good times there too!

but its flat windy drab and sprawling. has no personality and the food is the suck unless you like applebees type strip mall crap or overpriced yuppie crap.

its fine to visit friends but i would never live there.

like 92% of vegas is service industry where everyone is out to hustle everyone else.
no thanks, maybe 342 real people in that place. the weather is worse than the midwest which is really really hard to do in the continental US as well. just a huge LOL at vegas being on anyone's top 700 list. its obv awesome for short stays

Lived in Vegas for a while and it's awful. When you're not on the strip in terrible traffic then you're in in suburban hell

If you're unmarried I think Vegas is a wonderful city to live in. Great food, really cheap housing & living expenses, endless shows & entertainment to choose from and of course plenty of live poker options. I'm very happy living here.

I certainly wouldn't want to raise a kid here though.

So don't drive on the strip. Koval/Paradise/Dean Martin are excellent North-South substitutes and the freeways here are smooth sailing even in rush hour (assuming no construction). You shouldn't need to drive on the strip to get anywhere.

Atlanta is elite without having everything perfect. I work in the middle of Buckhead and out of the 8 people in my office only one person has a longer commute than my 7-8 minutes. There are tons of great places to live in Midtown, Buckhead, VA Highlands, and Brookhaven.
