4th and 1 at midfield up 1 with 50 seconds left and atl has no timeouts. Even if you convert the sneak 100%, which you don't, i doubt punting loses you more than 0.1 in WP.

Vs TB.
Similar situation except tb is down 8 and needs a 2pc and to win in OT.
Cant imagine tb has anymore than 0.02 in WP.

The third one i forget.
They were all bad decisions, but saying that those decisions cost them three games is as stupid and anti math as the coaches saying "we had to trust our defense"

they absolutely costed 3+ games and your win estimates are awful, especially when you know he is sending out a defense that gives up huge pass plays in the fourth quarter with great regularity

This is Bob from Matthews, and that last caller, Riverman, sort of stole my point about Rivera, he's just got no guts at all, Cam Newton's got no brains at all, and it takes more than speed and a great arm to win football games.

lol, of course "cost X games" can mean something other than "worth -X in WPA." Ron Rivera made obvious, high-leverage mistakes that ended up with the team losing.

Say team X is playing the Patriots, has been moving the ball well all game, then on 4th and 2, up 34-31, with 3:30 left in the game, punts the ball from the Pats' 38. This is worth a fixed amount of WPA, probably .20 or whatever (would run it through ANFL calculator but at work imo). But, if the Patriots go down the field and score a touchdown and win, I think it's perfectly fair to say that the coach of team X "cost his team the game."

counterpoint: if rivera hadn't trusted the defense by punting it on 4th down then cam would've failed to pick up the 1st, you lose anyway, and your depressed & unloved D would've blown the game against the redskins because of low morale.

That's fair, but fig guy and riverman and others are suggesting that their brilliant GTO tuned minds would be worth several wins above non union mexican equivalent chilly

when you talk in terms of losing x games per year, you are clearly talking about WPA and not individual game situations. just like a player can be worth x WAR but could've had far greater or far less WPA depending on how well he did in the clutch.

No idea why people didn't get this. Cost (the short term result subject to variance) and Cost (The amount of long-term expectation wagered on a choice) aren't the same thing.

"i am worth several wins over mexican chilly" =/= "the panthers would have won 3 more games this season if i were coaching instead of mexican chilly". (afaik dkgo has fairly consistently said the latter, which is probably true, instead of the former, which is more questionable.)
