Das Boot is right that a well-educated 2p2er could improve a team's win probabilities with accurate 4th down / late-game calculations and decisions, but that is not the same thing as replacing a coach and taking on all of his duties

Assani's posts are pretty much an exercise in "Guys, I know I'm really smart, but am I, like, really, really smart, or just really smart?"

Boozy egg nog is one of those drinks that sounds awesome in theory but after like two of them you're totally sick of it

that's true of white russians and complex-flavored single malt scotches too, doesn't mean those drinks are also not great.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Holiday Discussion

agreed, but the principle still holds true. if you're getting drunk on white russians alone, you're doing it wrong and will feel awful the next day, if not in a few hours. so too with egg nog - one has to pace one's self.

I'm sure no 2p2er would be smart enough to hire individuals underneath to maximize these things
Quote:
The cynical part is your presumption that I have no idea what staff building entails. Pretty sure I (or any 2p2er) could solicit applicants, interview people, and offer salaries, and that would attract prospective employees. The salary part usually does the job.

The "realistic" brigade also pretty strongly downplays the huge advantages a 2p2 HC would have. There's a good chance you add a win just in 4th down decision-making. Baseline optimized playcalling (using existing plays) is probably in the ballpark of another win.
Quote:
k maybe not "any 2p2er". Pretty much assuming we're talking about the top 5 or 1% or whatever of posters when we talk about "2p2 HCs", obviously I don't think Sy.stolic or maulaga is gonna run that search particularly well or add any of the advantages that a math-fluent 2p2er would add. Didn't state that though so here it is.
Quote:
I agree they'd likely be very bad compared to the average NFL coach in certain areas. There's just no real way of knowing if, with the best setup + the best coaches they can find/attract underneath them to complement their weaknesses, that'll be 1 win or 3 wins or 5 wins below average, which is obviously a huge deal. It's also immensely variable depending on the individual (as Assani said, I think being an athlete would help.)

The adding value by math part isn't really conjecture - optimal 4th-down decisions gets you the majority of the way there by itself over most coaches. Then you have optimal run-pass balance, game theory, more detailed analytics on effectiveness of certain plays, etc.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Holiday Discussion

No, it's pretty clear that, despite his reservations, he thinks a 2+2 coach (say, Assani) could do a better job than an IRL coach, say, Ron Rivera.
