The #flyers have placed Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination, citing a material breach.

I had no idea that guy was on the Flyers now. 8 million still owed (between Flyers and Preds). Let's see if they get away with it

Just look at this defense depth chart for a supposed Cup or Bust team

Ekholm-Bouchard - very good, can stand with just about any top pair
Nurse-Stecher/Edmonson - big yikes. Nurse is a mess right now, and your partners for him are a 30 year old making league min, or a 24 year old who was on waivers less than a year ago.
Kulak-Stecher/Edmonso - I mean...ok this should be a pairing that doesn't see the ice that much, and Kulak is ok.

What if one of the top pair guys gets hurt? Season over?

Going to have to outscore a lot of mistakes this year.

Yeah when they traded Cici I thought they were matching Broberg . Cici logged 20 minutes a night last year

My take on Nurse is he is a young guy that got a ton of money enjoying life and shows up sometimes. He has the size and the skill to be an elite player just not the drive . BUt never blame him for taking all that cash

i doubt anyone in the org is even holding out hope for that, but rather they realize they're stuck with him

I was going to mock this, but always doing things based on hope that unlikely things work out certainly would be in line with the Oilers management philosophy

I mean they don't have much choice. Nurse has gotta be one of the most untradeable guys in the league. I know we've said this about many guys who did end up being traded, but it typically doesn't happen in August or September. May as well hope against hope.

It is pretty puzzling though that they ended up again with no RD that can mitigate his flaws a bit. If you have a guy like that you'd want someone to play with him who is at least secure in his own role, if not able to babysit him. Instead they've got a slew of guys who'll have to fake it as a 2nd pair dman themselves. Gotta hope they can outscore their problems in the regular season (should be fine) and then get someone legit at the deadline.

Habs should take Nurse as a reclamation project.

He was home to celebrate his sister's wedding, which was supposed to happen today. So terrible for the whole family. His brother also died in the accident.

He was my son's favorite player when he was with the Flames and my son was just getting into hockey. Just sad and tragic for his family and the blue jackets organization.

Quote:
NHL player Johnny Gaudreau of the Columbus Blue Jackets was killed Thursday night when he was hit by a car while riding a bicycle in his home state of New Jersey. He was 31.

New Jersey State Police said Gaudreau was one of two cyclists struck and killed by a car in Salem County, New Jersey. Gaudreau’s younger brother, Matthew, 29, was the other victim in the crash, police confirmed.

The Carneys Point, New Jersey, natives were in the area for their sister Katie’s wedding scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia.

According to police, the Gaudreau brothers were cycling on a road when a man driving in the same direction attempted to pass two other vehicles and struck them from behind. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver, Sean M. Higgins, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and charged with two counts of death by auto and jailed at the Salem County Correctional Facility.

Johnny Gaudreau, known as “Johnny Hockey,” has played 11 professional seasons in the league and was going into his third with the Blue Jackets. He played his first nine with the Calgary Flames, a tenure that included becoming one of the sport’s top players and a fan favorite across North America.

Gaudreau, at 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, was part of a generation of hockey players who thrived in an era of speed and skill that made being undersized less of a disadvantage. He scored 20-plus goals six times and was a 115-point player in 2021-22 as a first-time NHL All-Star when he had a career-best 40 goals and 75 assists.

A fourth-round pick of Calgary’s in 2011, Gaudreau helped Boston College win the NCAA championship in 2012 and in 2014 took home the Hobey Baker Award as the top college player in the country.

Gaudreau was a point-a-game player with 642 points in 644 regular-season and playoff games since breaking into the league. He holds the men’s world championship records by a U.S. player with 30 assists and 43 points, earlier this year breaking marks previously held by Patrick Kane.

couldn't believe it when i heard, horrible. rest in peace

Tragic I guess the cars ahead pulled over to the left to pass the cyclist safely and the guy tries to pass on the shoulder said he had 6-7 beers .

On the night of his sisters wedding as well so sad

When I was a little kid, I always heard a story about a wedding day disaster. It must have happened 20 years before I was born, but the Gaudreau accident brought it out again.

That's a scar that will last generations.
