I was made fun of for having a blue visor. I know that your mind gets used to the cage and I know that chrome is easier to get used to than black, but it was always a vision issue for me. I don't think I'd ever make fun of someone for wearing a neck guard and I honestly feel stupid for not wearing one.

It's a requirement in youth hockey

kids would literally poke at it at faceoffs and call me a f@ggot or pussy

teammates (and their parents) would also poke fun of it but in a friendlier locker room talk type

i kept wearing it, but once I grew out of it I didn't both getting a new one - which was kind of silly to think it was nice to have as a 12 year old but not as a 16 year old when things go a lot faster and harder

more than once i took a puck or stick ot the neck and/or saw a teammate downed by a puck or stick to the neck so was happy to wear it and accept the ribbing

janky league in western mass, most teams we played were in upstate ny

it was just sheffield youth hockey

towards the end it became more formalized and got rebranded at the Berkshire Tri-State Rattlers

Apparently they ditched tri-state

Man, that Adam Johnson incident really looks intentional on the part of Matt Petgrave, the perpetrator.

there's no way i'm going to watch it - can you describe what exactly happened and why you think it kinda looked intentional

The guy was skating over in Johnson's direction then lifts his leg (of his own volition) high in the air and towards Johnson's throat. Almost like a kickboxing push kick or something. It's not like he was flipped causing his skates to fly up near Johnson's head. He pretty much raised his leg on his own really high. I've never ever seen a skater raise their leg like that on their own in hockey.

oh wow, sounds terrible

I didn't want to think it was intentional (because who does that) but it sure looks like it was.

I'm guessing he wasn't trying to kill him, but a kick to the chest seems like a dumb way to get revenge in hockey if they had some type of beef.

Even in the absolute best case scenario for Petgrave, it's still a highly negligent move on his part.

I meant the kick and not the result, but kicking in hockey isn't a thing.

Yah, I know. I was adding on to your comment. I figured you didn't think he meant to kill him, but I agree the kicking action does seem intentional.

Obviously Malarchuk comes to mind, but skate cuts are freak accidents. This shouldn't happen away from the boards or net.

I think the only time I saw something that level of scary was Trent McCleary vs the flyers.

Evander Kane had his wrist skated over by Maroon last year. He immediately saw what happened and called for trainers. He was shook up after that for sure. I also remember the Malarchuk play too. Scary ****.

And yeah hockey culture I'm sure if anyone had a neck guard on when I was younger I would have called him a pussy too.

That's kind of my point. Getting cut along the boards or in front of the net where skates occasionally are elevated makes sense. It happening in open ice does not.

I hate that there is a hockey culture. It's such a great sport and normally a great team culture, but yeah this doesn't surprise me... it's just how it is/was.

The great thing about hockey and McDavid in particular is that I'm legitimately unsure wether that's a joke or it actually happened
