Harsh, but maybe fair.

The Steelers are that old saying, if you think everyone's a jerk, you probably oughta look in the mirror.

They have problems with the Ravens, they have problems with the Bengals. They had many problems with the Broncos a few weeks ago.

The Bengals have a hot rivalry with the Ravens, but this stuff doesn't happen. They played the Broncos right after the Steelers did, clean football game.

There's a common denominator here, but Steelers fans don't want to admit it. Maybe I wouldn't want to either, although I would like to think I'd be self aware enough to own it. But no, Steelers fans want their team to win dirty and be praised by everyone for how clean and tough they are.

Pretty sure that in the the last 20 years NFL there has not been a single spearing call for a one on one tackle made on a running back who's not in a defenseless position under the rules. Bengals fans complaining about that hit or expecting a call are being ridiculous regardless of what the rulebook says. Was bad break that Shazier's TD was called back.

guessing he'll lose, but tbf based on precedent it should probably be like 1-2 games

NFL seems to hate suspending for in-game plays

Yeah pretty much. It has to be beyond blatant. I can't remember the last spearing call that didn't involve a defenseless receiver or QB.

When was the last time a player was knocked out during a game by a helmet to helmet hit that it wasn't called a personal foul?

Rules are the rules. And I think the 2013 rule change was made precisely to cover this type of situation.

I don't get how a foul can be so bad that it warrants a three game suspension but not bad enough to get the player ejected.

I agree with this, but I would rather not have this be in the hands of the referee team who sees the hit once in real time and ejects somebody because the hit looked bad.

Also it was 18 seconds from the end of the game. It would have been pretty pointless to eject someone at that point.

Not to nitpick, but I think two of those videos were from before the rule was changed and another was near the line of scrimmage, which shouldn't have been flagged. Didn't see a video on the Mathews hit.

The Mitchell hit may have been ruled to be inadvertent, as he didn't look like he was targeting the head. But we have seen ample evidence that the refs don't know the rules very well either, so maybe they just don't make this call like you said.

To be honest, I thought the original explanation (he was a runner and not a defenseless receiver) made a lot of sense, until it turned out to be a completely wrong interpretation of the rule.

Also, at the time, Burfict seemed to be arguing that he couldn't be flagged since he hit Brown with his shoulder, which is also a wrong interpretation. So he didn't know the rule either, which was costly.

Like I said, the rules are so confusing that no one, not the refs, not the players and not the fans, knows what's going on half the time.

refs are a lot like cops who shoot people

don't want their authority challenged and will never be held accountable, even with video evidence

Vontaze Burfict - dirty player, angry, breaks the rules. Verdict: ****head, not a thug

Aaron Hernandez - murderous, crimelord, insatiable bloodlust. Verdict: thug

refs are probably told to not eject players in playoff games unless the player is literally killing someone on the field. i also suspect they are told to not eject stars ever because if anyone other than OBJ acted in the way OBJ did vs the panthers i'm sure he would've been tossed. if they aren't being told not to eject anyone they are probably scared to do it on their own because rog is gonna give them an earful after the game

My beef is really with the people who bust out spearing which has been on the books forever but is never called.

I think it's debatable whether the new rule would apply but regardless it hasn't really been enforced since it's been on the books. To use it for the first time to erase a turnover in the playoff game would be like the tuck rule call.

I think saying we have ample evidence that the refs don't know the rules is kinda LOL, they don't get every call right in real time but they know the rules and how the league wants them interpreted much better than anyone on this board does.

I think the problem is there is so much going on it is impossible to ref the games.

Add in slo mo and 97 angles replayed over and over it makes them look worse.
