But I don’t think it’s much about the coach anyway. It’s about the cattle and England just don’t have them
Needs the support of the captain primarily and Pat just didn't have that level of relationship with JL so something had to give.

I have a friend who used to coach one of the team (in AFL). Apparently JL is a total cock and no one likes him. There was a mutiny post the last tour but they kept him on for the Ashes under sufferance

I still think it was handled really badly by CA. Get rid of him if you want to, but don’t do it like this

i would be bothered if an aussie was hired as our coach. whole point of international cricket is that its your best blokes vs their best blokes.

note that i am willing to make a unlimited exceptions for people who actually have an impact on the result eg kevin pietersen

--

my current sporting hero paul stirling will be batting in the psl in an hour or so. i expect i am about 10 years late to the party on this one but what a man. just a big fat ginger irishman opening the batting and belting it for 6 every ball

Imo you want a coach to get the best out of the home players…no matter where he/she came from.

you weren’t happen with the Fletcher era of English cricket?

British Lions under Gatland?

Should Redgrave and Pinsent give all their medals back because they had a foreign coach? Mo Farah too?

etc etc

dont think the coach of the intl side influences the outcome by even 1%. the only skill is not falling out with everyone.

might as well put ant and dec in as joint head coach. they'll have just as much chance of fixing rory burns' dodgy technique in the little time they have together each year as anyone else

Maybe he wasn't willing to go quietly so they had no choice

It is a little bit different here in Australia where usually 60% of the players that play for Australia usually come from the one state (NSW) so where you also have a captain as well (which is normal too) from there you really need a coach that gets on with its players and also doesn't upset the apple cart of picking NSW players (who are usually the most credentialed) by favouring players from the coach's home state in WA that either shouldn't have got a chance or as many chances as they were given (Harris, Marsh brothers, Turner, Agar, Coulter Nile and to a lesser extent Stonis).

It's that time of the week again when I post a test XI and you guys rip it to shreds.

This week is Post War Test XI but the batting lineup must be in alphabetical order.

M Atapattu
A Cook
R Dravid
J Kallis
V Kohli
VVS Laxman
K Sangakkara
D Steyn
C Vaas
C Walsh
S Warne

I know that Kohli is batting out of position and the tail enders are in the wrong order but I'm OK with that.

From your last email the rules were…don’t pick their performance in the time period pick them on their whole career?

Most important thing is to get Bradman in there but Amiss and Boycott way better than Attapattu and Cook anyway

Obviously you’d rather not have Murali at 7 but it doesn’t matter given the rest of the line up

Hammond and Kallis both very good bowlers and two of the best slip catchers in history

Amiss
Boycott
Bradman
Hammond
Kallis
Lara
Murali
Sangakarra
Steyn
Walsh
Warne

Your's is clearly much better.

I maybe should have said 90s again.

I'm always going to pick players who I've seen play rather than historical players with awesome stats. More enjoyable for me that way.

And the team they're playing:

D Warner
G Smith
R Ponting
B Lara
J Kallis
R Jadeja
A Gilchrist
A Donald
S Broad
C Ambrose
J Anderson

Who wins the match?

Tail is a little long with Steyn Murali and Walsh and I spent more time on batters than bowlers. I

I think if we were happy to have Andy Flower bat 4 and keep then it would open up a ton more bowlers.

Hammond Kallis Lara at 5,6,7 is an absolute murderers row.

I think that’s the key though because it allows Malcolm Marshall who I would pick ahead of Walsh.

Tbh I was trying to find a way to get Javed Miandad in there but couldn’t quite do it. IMO he’s the most underrated batsman of my lifetime … possibly because he was also a total ****

surely there’s better than Jadeja?

I’m going to bed but there has to be a better way to organise the batting and sub him out.

Also I’d definitely find a way to get rid of Broad and Joel Garner or .Colin Croft or Sylvester Clarke

Imagine getting a number 6 out and then Lara walks out to bat...

I’m not a big Warner fan but Warner Smith and then Ponting would be a lot of fun

Ponting scored the best innings I’ve ever seen live - 200 at Adelaide Oval in about 2003. We watched him in the nets before play and he looked so compact and correct that we honestly all walked away saying that he wouldn’t get out that day. And he didn’t

I'm sure there's better than Jadeja but I wanted some spin and he came to mind and roughly fits at that batting position.

I do these XIs for the discussion more than anything. I also know you could game these hypothetical by batting loads of greats out of position but that'd be less fun.
