He had to survive and score runs and grind them out. He was not out more than 15% of the time when batting at 5. That shouldn't happen but shows why his average is so good and also who he was playing alongside.
Gilly could often come out and swing for quick runs which is going to negatively affect his batting average.

if you think it’s easier to build a batting average playing 5 for Zimbabwe than 7 for one of the greatest teams of all time then I’m not sure what to talk about next
I think Flower was a better keeper because I watched a lot of test cricket. Gilly got better but was never a particularly great keeper, particularly to spin
