I did see him rip his head set off during the last game. But it's preseason so it doesn't count.

Caldwell's not really the coach though it he? I remember that game when Peyton alpha male'd him by sending the punter/kicker back off the field then proceeded to move the chains. That was funny. Peyton's like "***** get the **** outta here you go tell that Tim Fallwell guy to lick my taint. I got a game to win."

Good piece in FO today about Mario Williams' transition to a 3-4.

Cliffs: He looks out of place and not as effective there, and if the Texans really are gung-ho about playing the 3-4, he is probably better suited to playing a Bruce Smith-style DE.

Lot of interesting debate goin' on 7 months ago.

Since then the Texans drafte JJ Watt in the first round as DE, and Brooks Reed in the 2nd as OLB. Both have looked great in the pre-season. Barwin has looked good, too.

Their pre-season defensive system results have looked far better than I could have hoped for at the time. I think this would be true for anybody. LOL pre-season tho. Let's see what happens come week 1 vs. Peyton and the Colts.

I still think Mario is too ****ing tall to play OLB and doesn't have the lateral quickness. The guy really needs to stay down to be able to use leverage and disrupt. He's not Clay Mathews and will never be Clay Mathews. They are two different body types.

So, 3 weeks into the pre-season I would agree with the sentiment that "Mario Williams isn't working too well in the 3-4". But that may be because he's been standing up the whole time. I suppose this article is saying there might still be hope for him as 3-4 DE? Their 3 down linemen are pretty bad/weak. Smith/Cody/Watt.

BUT, the key thing is overall they have looked completely revamped so far this year. Their results speak for themselves. I have never seen them getting this much pressure on the QB since Mario was drafted in 2006. Not even close.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how they will do this year. I'm excited! Even if they aren't as good as they've been in the pre-season, any improvement will help over being ranked 32nd last year or whatever the **** they were. LOL @ that.

I guess I overstated when I said things like "there's no evidence that changing to a 3-4 would significantly improve their performance", because last year's defense was so damn bad that any real change would have improved it. But what I really mean there is that "there's no evidence that changing to a 3-4 would significantly improve their performance any more than sticking with a 4-3 and bringing in better players and a qualified coordinator for that would."

I was very impressed with the 49ers game and am surprised the team got the talent in place to run the 3-4 effectively so quickly. J.J. Watt looks like the real deal.

I still think the defense will be better if/when they slide Mario down to the 3-4 DE spot Smith is playing and add, say, Brooks Reed to the starting lineup.

I still think clearing house with the coaching/FO entirely would have been better, and one of my posts in that argument makes a good case as to why-- the team has really not developed enough talent through the draft under Rick Smith. And I don't think it would have been hard to find another coach who could make the offense hum.

I kinda like this statement by Polian: "Indianapolis Colts vice chairman Bill Polian recently said that no matter what players you give Phillips for his fronts and overall defensive concepts, he will make it work."

This is basically what I was hoping would be true. I'm a firm believer in a system being more important than the pieces. Dick LeBeau has had a great defensive system for so many years and he's had plenty of pieces turned over. I think Phillips has proven to be a good 3-4 defensive mind and don't see why he can't get more out of his pieces than Smith did last year.

Phillips already said upon arriving here that we had better talent than he realized before he took the job. That... speaks volumes about how inept our DC was last year. Phillips is basically intimating that the team has talent that was not really unearthed and probably feels comfortable doing that this year.

Whether Mario plays poorly at OLB, DE, or is just traded for not fitting in, I don't really care as long as the overall product is good. However, I don't think it's close to that point yet where we have to wonder what to do with Mario.

Speaking of trades. What kind of NT could we get for Mario Williams? I'm assuming that would be a very inefficient trade to pull off since any team with a good NT plays a 3-4 and won't really want to move him for a 4-3 DE. Are there any current 4-3 teams with a good NT on their roster? Haynesworth? Ngata? Thought Ngata was in a 3-4 but then I seem to think they switched recently to 4-3? Anyway I wouldn't see BALT GM (forget his name but he's good) trading Ngata for Mario.

A Smith-Ngata-Watt
Barwin-Ryans-Cushing-Reed front 7 would be pretty sexy though!

I admittedly underestimated the difference Wade's scheme has made, but I also stand by what I said about this team doing a very poor job of identifying or developing young talent.

If I were Baltimore I wouldn't give up Ngata for Williams. Houston shouldn't be looking to give up Williams anyway, since the chances of getting an equitable return on him are near zero. They ought to focus on finding a way to maximize his efficiency.

Added on to the end of his current deal? lol wtf.

How much of that is guaranteed? None of that is upfront? So they can keep him for 2 years and then just cut him for little cost? Or am I wrong.

I agree Mario should be the weakside 5, or strongside 7/9 tech LB.

He isn't reducing well on run plays and looks totally lost in coverage. Nose has to be a priority right now. Pat Williams might not have the desire but would be a great mercenary if willing and motivated.

It has been pretty ****ing awesome to see 3rd down sacks on the reg. Lets go regular season.

NFL Network making it sound more and more like Peyton won't play week 1 Noodle. Colts 3-13 team without Peyton. I heard a guy on some sports talk radio show say that and I'm not sure I disagree.

If Texans can't beat the Manning-less Colts at home I don't know if Pubiak makes it out of the stadium alive.
