Sample size obv, but the Jags interim coach didn't impress me at all.

Not challenging the apparent MJD TD on the opening drive was bad, then running a 7 yards deep toss sweep on 4th and inches was even worse.

Dropping into a prevent shell up 13 with 6:25 left (the regular defense had given up just 2 FGs in the first 53 minutes, maybe just keep using that) and allowing the Colts to cruise down the field for a TD in 3 minutes while preserving their time outs for their defense was absolutely horrendous.

Way too much passing in the red zone. If MJD is tired from his 50 yard run, you are better off taking a TO to let him get his breath than forcing Gabbert to throw a couple passes in the red zone (with MJD not even on the field to keep the defense honest either).

The Jags should have won that game by 3 scores IMO.

Maybe they didn't want to win.

You love nitpicking and making fun of the Jags and for some reason...their coaches. Have you seen your coach? Glass houses man. And Tony Dungy hasn't exactly helped his legacy since he left for TV.

Most coaches are awful.

Meh, TNM isn't to far off here. Tucker really didn't show a whole lot in his 5 games. The San Diego and Atlanta games were atrocious. Yes they were against better teams but man they were just horrendous.

Tucker did do an amazing job with the defense this year. They were a legit sieve last year and the front 7 played much better. I know the free agent additions had a good bit to do with that but Tucker does deserve some credit for that.

It was a hellish situation. I have to also think that Jags made Tucker the head coach over Koetter just so they could "interview" him and get the minority interview out of the way. Tucker will go somewhere and likely be a good DC for that team.

Having Gabbert throw is definitely not a bad decision and was Koetter's to make. I think you had to give the guy as many chances in the last game as possible. I have zero problem with that. Gabbert had a woeful season and giving him the opportunity to make a few nice passes to end the season.

You have to wonder what the week long discussions were like going into this game. I said it yesterday, being the only AFCS to sweep the Colts since the division was created was nice, I was very happy about the win, definitely felt great to end the season like that. The Weaver's were sent out on a wonderful note, those two did a tremendous amount for that city and deserve all the positives that are said about them.

But...a loss would have helped the franchise more. Rams given the 1st pick for Luck to either draft or trade, Colts would then either have to trade to get Luck or, if they want a QB, take the lesser wanted RG3(who could very well > Luck, who knows with college athletes and all that). Not to mention I believe Jacksonville will fall into the trap they fell in 2004. Larry Fitz goes off the board in front of them and they take Reggie Williams. Justin Blackmon will go before 7(who I know is not in the same class of hype that Fitz had coming out) and the Jaguars will end up reaching on Micheal Floyd.

Eh, we have a long way to go before the draft so a thousand things could happen. All in all, I wish the best for Tucker and I hope the Jags can find someone, somewhere to work with Gabbert this offseason. We all knew he was a project, just hopefully they get someone that knows a little bit about converting these spread QBs.

People on this forum say Andy Reid is awful due to his in-game decision making, which is usually awful, no question. But, with that said, From Monday-Saturday there are not many coaches better than Reid in the NFL.

Most fans criticize coaches for the 3 hours a week they see them.

He definitely deserves a ton of credit for the defensive improvement, no doubt about that. As a HC though he just seemed pretty underwhelming. The whole game just had that feel of 'How the **** are the Colts still in this?'

The prevent on the last Colts drive was classic bad coaching. MJD bailed them out with that beastly 5 yard run on 3rd and 4. If he hadn't burst through three defenders for those last 3 yards the Colts would have gotten the ball back with plenty of time to mount a game winning drive. A pretty impressive season by MJD overall, especially considering he had to be facing 8 in the box all season long.

I was laughing at the announcers when they said Tucker had been promised an interview for the HC job in the offseason, as if the Rooney rule didn't make that a forgone conclusion.

That is a fair point. Normally, even if the OC is calling the plays you can blame the HC for letting the OC call head scratching plays (the 4th and goal was really the worst one imo) but an interim coach doesn't really have the clear power structure set up so its hard to tell if that is what his team would look like if he was fully in charge.

This was definitely a game that both franchises would have been better off losing. Good luck explaining that to guys like Robert Mathis though (and lol pro-bowl for taking Freeney and his name over Mathis this season).

Gabbert has some promise, made some nice throws (the TD was very well placed), but its going to take time. The recent rookie QBs doing well out the gate have really decreased fan bases tolerance for waiting on young QBs to develop, but you still have to give guys time.

5 pm press conference scheduled, conflicting reports of what is going down.

I think its going to be a clean sweep. I love Bill Polian and what he has done for the franchise, but Chris has been getting more control than he has earned for a couple years now.

Having Caldwell do his regularly scheduled press conference earlier was weird. I want him fired, but if they let him do a press conference like nothing was changing, then can him later in the day that is pretty classless.

Judging a coach who was thrown into Jacksonville's situation, with a new owner, after more than half the games have been played this year, and with a "QB controversy" where both QBs are awful just seems like a weird thing to talk about at this point in time.

Sounds like Caldwell is gone too via rotoworld/chris mortensen.

So cleaning house. Gruden to Indy has to be something discussed at this point.

Jaguars looking at Carolina OC who worked with Cam as their next coach. No idea how "Chud" would do as a HC but I love the idea of going after someone to work with Blaine.

I thought you were kidding until I saw it posted elsewhere (here for those equally skeptical)

I'm not sure what this means. I hope Irsay went to Bill and said "Chris is a ******, fire him and keep being awesome", Bill said if he goes I go, and Irsay reluctantly threw the baby out with the bathwater.

If that wasn't the case, how the holy **** does Caldwell still have a job????

Gruden has said he's 100% not coaching this year and some talking heads on NBC said all their sources agreed.

There are a large number of other big name guys out there though. Have to be a favorite to end up with one of them.

That was before a job opening with Peyton Manning and potentially Andrew Luck opened up.

Caldwell can't possibly survive a regime change. The Polian's were his only defenders.

As far as coaches go, its tough to predict until a new GM is named. The real question now is does Peyton Manning have a strong say in this process, or is he on his way out too?

Rotoworld's take:

Quote:
Jim Caldwell and his coaching staff will also be fired once owner Jim Irsay decides on new management. The Polians had lived off Peyton Manning for several years in Indianapolis, failing to upgrade a collapsing, aging offensive line and providing Manning with zero running game threat. The wheels fell off quickly when Manning got injured because the Colts had no way to generate ball movement on offense and their defense has always stunk. The Polians also completely whiffed on at least two of their last three first-round picks (Anthony Gonzalez, Jerry Hughes) entering 2011, and the other (Donald Brown) is a backup-caliber running back. It's time to start over.

...and who is Irsay keen to draft (seriously, I can't recall anything meaningful from him. Has he weighed in?).

It's a gross thought if he's able to play but all of these guys:

Reggie Wayne
Jeff Saturday
Robert Mathis
Ryan Diem
Pierre Garcon
Anthony Gonzalez
Phillip Wheeler
Jacob Lacey

have a vested interest in Manning being somewhere else next season.

Some of those guys (cough Mathis cough) would be huge to keep around and with Peyton's money off the books and Luck's comparatively friendly rookie deal on, that's an easy thing to make happen.

Edit: Does anyone have a salary cap database they trust? I'm curious to see what shape the Colts are in with guys like Bracket getting cut (which he prob. will).

I think on the Thursday Night game Irsay said that they would look at "the quarterback" in the draft if I am remembering correctly. It was on the pregame show on NFLN.

The Colts are in a really strange spot.

I could imagine a scenario where they are right back to the top of the AFC South next year with the aging core and better health and coaching, or it could be a total rebuilding youth movement.

Yes. Irsay said they wouldn't pass up on a young QB in the draft. What/if they do anything after that is still questionable.

I am all for Fischer. Tressel would be weird.
