1) Russia not as important as China, but they do have a role to play as a regional military power, a nuclear state, a Security Council member, and based on historical ties that date back to the Soviet days. Read up on the so-called 6 Party Talks (US, S. Korea, N. Korea, China, Russia, and Japan) for more details.

2) There are many reasons why having good relations w/ Russia COULD benefit the US. That being said, we need a thorough investigation to make sure that improved relations are being driven by our national strategic goals and not by the personal financial interests of the President and/or other high government officials.
