It depends. Under 24 probably not good, but by mid/late twenties most folks have restaurant culture and courtesy figured out.

I'm pretty suspicious of this. I find it hard to believe that many international travelers from Europe/Aus are actually unaware of American tipping customs by now.

If you're vegetarian you can't get enough protein. Something something you have to eat meat to get your protein.

My take on it is that they're aware that we tip a lot more here in the states, but they're not quite sure what is standard, or how to figure it out. And that shouldn't be surprising. Most people are so mathematically inept that maybe the only thing some people can do is figure out 15 or 20% of a number due to the practice of figuring out tips.

You wouldn't believe how many times a fellow server is given, say, $40 on a $25 check and they sit there struggling to figure out the change. And I'll say, "it's 15" and they look at me like I've just pulled a rabbit out my ass.

On tipping, is 15-20% just recommended to subsidize the crappier tips? As in if everyone actually did tip that amount, would servers be considered overpaid for their job?

I know it's the wrong thread but this reminds me of a guy I work with. In the company dining hall he regularly sends food back to the kitchen. He eats half the plate first, so he gets two meals for the price of one. He also normally orders something not on the menu.

Seeing the names of certain posters fills me with dread before I even read their posts. Is this stereotyping?

That is rich coming from someone who posts Nazi slogans when he argues with Jews.

I just straight up disagree with this, at least in Wellington.

Interesting thoought. I suppose so, since some people do stiff and servers seem to be doing fine earning at the current tip amounts

the whole tipping thing is stupid tho. Employers make their employees take the risk of cheap customers and that's all there is to it. I'm european, I like to know how much exactly I am going to pay before I step in in a place. Be it sales taxes or tips or whatever bull**** I'm supposed to be aware of.

I mean, there is never a moment that ISNT perfectly fine to rant about USA#923173 and their ****ty tipping customs, its just known to turn threads into aids about tipping.
