i wouldn't get too caught up in stereotypes, it's a pretty lazy way to think.

What do you mean by 'caught up in stereotypes' and how is what I've said characteristic of doing so?

I know a black person who doesn't run fast, though, so maybe it's just 99.99999% true.

Most stereotypes are cultural, for example Indians often smell funny because they eat loads of curry.

When I was young I was faster than 99.9% (at least) of all black people alive. I am not black. What does that do to your theory?

The problem with the "black people are fast" thing is that it's a massive generalization of a huge population with massive genetic diversity. You have those Kenyans that win the marathon events but you don't see those guys winning the 100m sprints for example cause they're built pretty differently and that's just one example.

West Africans dominate fast twitch whereas East Africans dominate slow twitch

In both cases they're still blazing fast, just over different distances

Sweet **** all.

Generalisations are justified when a general trend does indeed appear.

The odd anomaly is nothing to the contrary. You might as well tell me that you know a tall Chinese guy and that therefore they aren't on average, shorter than most Europeans.

You make bad threads. You might as well tell me you made this and it's an anomaly but wait, never mind.

True, but one still must be prudent in public. Stating facts or observations of general trends could cause someone to lose their job

This is simplistic thinking. Let's look at your original statement.

"black people running fast is 100% true" You use the Olympics as justification for this belief. The Olympics say nothing about the average black person. The people running the 100m in the Olympics are the anomaly. They are the few handful that rise to the very top, the outliers. To say that black people are fast based on this is as inane as saying "you know a tall Chinese guy and that therefore they aren't on average, shorter than most Europeans".

Why in the hell do you use the word "that" so ****ing often when it's completely unnecessary?

Not really. Why aren't other groups able to compete? It's pretty obvious we'll never see a man of non west African descent win the Olympic 100 or 200M

The fastest men are black =/= all black men are fast.

Not all black men are fast runners but they dominate sprinting to the extent that its fair to generalise, and even assume that its more likely there's a biological component to it than there not being one.

Rasta, you seem confused by what "100% true" and "generalization" mean.

There probably is a genetic component to the success of, at least, long distance runners; however this is not an instance of "black people are fast," but rather a case of one particular tribe, the Kalenjin, which comprises a small fraction of the world's black population (only 4.4. million people), having an innate ability to run fast over long distances.

The Kalenjin are also a good example of another instance in which Malcolm Gladwell is wrong, as he attributes their success to culture, when it seems like their success is innate.

Wouldn't it be that their potential is innate and their success a product of culture/hard work?

Quote:
It turns out that Kenyans' success may be innate. Two separate, European-led studies in a small region in western Kenya, which produces most of the race-winners, found that young men there could, with only a few months training, reliably outperform some of the West's best professional runners. In other words, they appeared to have a physical advantage that is common to their community, making it probably genetic. The studies found significant differences in body mass index and bone structure between the Western pros and the Kenyan amateurs who had bested them. The studied Kenyans had less mass for their height, longer legs, shorter torsos, and more slender limbs. One of the researchers described the Kenyan physical differences as "bird-like," noting that these traits would make them more efficient runners, especially over long distances.

Christofe Lemaitre is like the 10th fastest person in the world. Has won gold in major events. No, he won't win gold in the Olympics, but close enough that it's ridic to say it's obvious we will never see a person of non west African descent win.
