You're right, we forgot the #1 cardinal rule of listening to rap. if it's on the radio, it sucks! We're not in high school anymore tool, we can listen to what we like. And I have everything in my catalog from Del, to the Roots, to :::gasp::: Jeezy!

Nothin wrong with listenin to stuff from the radio but when asked who your fav rappers are and u list like 9 of the biggest rappers in terms of sales and notoriety it def says something about your taste.

QFT. A lot of the time it seems like the average fan is just fooled by a good beat, catchy hooks, some fake image, and simple lyrics (lately of the simple punchline variety ie lil wayne). I mean nothings wrong with good beats or catchy hooks, but don't let that fool yourself into thinking the guy you're listening to can actually spit.

Rap fans are definitely the worst fans I've ever come across genre-wise, this is just one reason.

The arsonists, especially earlier album Date of Birth, lots of wu-tang like references to kung fu and awesome back and forth lyrics.

I haven't read much of this thread so if these have already been mentioned a lot I apologize but,

Pandora has turned me on to Gang Starr and Skillz (formerly known as Mad Skillz).

i hate listening to Gangsta Grillz tapes cause of Drama's dumb ass talking during every track but at the same time they are usually very good

I never liked people doing that echo talk thing over music, don't understand the appeal. Especially when it's over the whole track.

They are exclusive tracks so the DJ is branding it so nobody else can steal it and take credit.

I'm curious as to what the happy medium is for guys like you, if people say they like MF and Aesop they get **** for jocking the counterculture lameness, but if they like Clipse or Weezy, they're just brainwashed by popularity.

Who, in your opinion, is talented, and in the middle? Just Nas?

It's not, I'm not one of those that takes dissenting opinions on music personally, just a curiosity thing.

dibbs, its really hard to just name rappers that "fit" that mold, but a few that come to mind for me are guys like:
Nas
Biggie
Jay-Z
Rakim
Brother Ali
Ghostface
ATCQ
The Roots
Mos Def

I could spend more time coming up with a list, but really its just about guys that come with good beats, well thoughtout lyrics(doesn't have to be "deep") and smooth producing.

I am not really into bashing backpackers, I just think some of the groups/artists people love from that genre are way overrated.
