Or try adjective —> adjectival. It moves two syllables in that one.

You say you don't understand it, but in many cases pronunciation is not something that can be understood. Convention wins. This particular convention won hundreds of years ago, in all likelihood, and I have never heard anyone bucking it.

Maniac/maniacal.

The pronunciation of RHET-or-ic isn't the problem, the pronunciation of rhe-TOR-i-cal means shifting the emphasis in order for it to sound better.

Thanks for the correction guys. Does that mean my pronunciation of "re-tor-ic" is technically wrong?

I don't like to use words like right and wrong with regard to pronunciation but nobody I know pronounces it that way and my guess is ~99% of english speakers would pronounce it with the stress on the first syllable.

Yes.

Some chick posted this facebook status yesterday that kinda irked me but I'm not 100% if it's just poorly worded or flat out wrong:

"I'm legitimately considering going to the beach today."

The word legitimately seems completely unnecessary and nonsensical to me in this usage. LITERALLY!

Has anyone here seen "english.jpg"? It's basically a somewhat hilarious and rude rant on the most basic mistakes people make in English. At the same time, it gets the point across the table and can even be a little educational.

Here's a link (strong language warning):

Now an assignment for the "nit's": can you spot the mistakes in the picture?

Problem?

Suggestion: don't read it if you don't care what it is about.

No problem sir.
I don't mind being a nerd, I mind when people I don't know call me one.

By the way, your avatar is amongst my top 5 favourites on this site.

A bunch of comma splices and other mistakes in that thing.

Edit: Oops. Didn't see that you recognized that.

There's a split infinitive, but we've already established that no one in this thread but me thinks those are necessarily errors.

The comma splices actually got annoying. One, I could see including for effect, but it reads as if the author thinks they're actually OK.

There's a run on sentence featuring two independent clauses with neither a conjunction nor any punctuation (not even a comma!) between them.

He neglects to capitalize the first person pronoun i a couple times in the script at the bottom.

In one case he uses like instead of as (a distinction few people, even in this nit thread, recognize and adhere to any more)
