His point was to ask whether it's redundant to say "I've got" versus "I have," since they basically mean the same thing.

Ok. It is only redundant if you think "I've some cookies" is grammatical. Otnemem and I have differing opinions on this.

edit: It's actually not redundant at all. As "I've got some cookies" is perfect tense. It's just a longer way to say it assuming "I've some cookies" is grammatical to you.

What in God's name are you talking about? He was asking what the difference is between saying "I've got some cookies" and "I have some cookies."

There is no difference in meaning.

I very cautiously agree with snowden's post in this thread, though I do so with no confidence and reserve the right to change my opinion because he's not very smart

I'm from Ohio and I use "I've" as the primary verb from time to time, most often in "I've no idea."

i think i am gonna just start declaring that can't != cannot. if anyone disagrees i will just assert my way to victory, even in the face of overwhelming proof.

well can't and cannot can be substituted in almost all contexts ( not mention contexts or belief sensitive contexts although the latter is unclear) because the contracted word can't be used as an auxiliary as well as a primary verb. You can however start declaring that I'll != I will, Let's != Let us (pretty obvious one), and I'm != I am.

Edit: To elaborate, strictly speaking it's obvious that can't and cannot aren't equal as there are a lot of sentences where you can't preserve meaning, truth, and grammaticalness when you switch them. However, all of those sentences aren't what we normally mean so must people would agree that you're right but in the majority of contexts it's ok.

I do not pretend to have "red" this entire thread in all it's glory, but I too have nit issues. First, I detest the current use of "irony" as a substitute for "coincidence." And second, I hate it when people pronounce the name of the Boston basketball team as "Seltics" rather than the proper "Keltics." Absolutely "tilt's" me, everytime.

I think what we need here is some MSPaint.

"I've" ≠ "I have." Instead "I've" ∈ "I have."

In contrast, "can't" = "cannot."

Do you apply this standard universally? For example, how do you pronounce "Quebec?"

Ending a sentence with a contraction looks dumb. That doesn't negate I've = I have.

"Can you bench press one metric ton?"

"No, I can't."

That's fine, and we end with a contraction.

You guys suck at grammar-nitting. Not one mention of abused subjunctive clauses, huh?

Also, I saw this once on slashdot: "mussel memory".

Some of the things listed in the thread as awful are my favorite features of English language. This especially goes for verbing of nouns, which is very difficult if not unpossible in my native language, Russian.
