It sounds like something that would be more competitive if he had a rickety old wheelbarrow. Maybe the skinny guy's angle is to mix the concrete (or enough of it to hit the right weight) and create something easier to carry.

Skinny guy trying to modify the bet. The sacks of concrete were purchased today; he had a chance to get a real-world, first hand idea of what he was working with. Buyouts being proposed for the existing $500 that's already been covered.

Bet is still 100% to be on as long as there's modification of some kind. Right now, it seems as if one 80# sack of quikrete is being discussed as the handicap.

Beat: Action window for the other $500 was closed before I could get in.
Brag: I get a free 80# bag of quikrete.
Variance: The bet will still be on and there's still even money action available, albeit with a more realistic handicap.

Is this a straight 440 yds. or once around a track? Unless Fatso has been in a bed ridden coma lately he's still a lock.

What? The fat guy isn't agreeing to modifying the bet without the skinny guy buyouting, right?

I would guess fat guy is still a good favorite with just 80lbs.

Once around a track. Fatty hasn't been bed-ridden in a coma, but the sum total of his daily physical activity amounts to walking to the fridge.

The seamstress lady in Berwyn who's making the harness for the concrete bags has been instructed to make the canvas pockets "deep" so 40# of quikrete can be poured into each side, as opposed to the original plan of mounting two, sealed 80# bags to the front and the back.

With the modified bet my money is still heavily on fat guy, but at least there's a chance in my mind that skinny guy could now win.

No, other people had action on it and now are like "wait, you can't just cut the handicap in half after the bets are down" so a buyout for the people who got in for the first $500 is being proposed.

There are people who are actually switching sides now that the handicap has been reduced from 160 to 80 and taking skinny. I still like fatty here, although I did see skinny run and he's pretty quick.

this is definitely a lock for fat guy ... although im wondering how similar this is to running with someone on your back. in high school for the wrestling team we had to run with some of equal weight on or backs. Cant remember how far we ran (at least 100m, then rotated), but we also ran up and down stairs as well.

fat guy is still going to win. 80 lbs is still waaaay too much weight for the skinny guy to be able to run effectively for more than a few feet. Even if fat guy also had to carry 80 lbs of concrete I'd still bet on him. People are seriously underestimating the extra muscle mass needed to spring with extra weight here.

With just 80 pounds, the lighter guy might have a chance. He should definitely invest in a backpack; how that weight is distributed makes a lot of difference.

As anyone who has done any backpacking could tell you, this guy won't be running with eighty pounds on his back. If he were in decent shape, he would be able to walk briskly, which would be enough to win. It's clear that he has no idea what he's doing though.

still take the fat guy. eighty pounds is a lot of weight. he'd be better off finding a way to rig it higher up, near his shoulders, than trying to wear it around his waist, that's going to totally wreck him. it's not just the weight but how it's distributed, too, and you have to factor in the size of this guy. 155 is pretty small and if he doesn't do any strength training up until this week, he'll probably have a hard time just carrying 80 pounds a quarter mile at all without stopping to rest multiple times. hell he might have a hard time walking at all.

i'm 6 feet 200 pounds, a lifelong athlete, and i have lots of experience moving heavy crap. i worked as a mover on-and-off for a couple years and i carry around musical equipment all the time in this weight range. with one eighty-pound bag and the weight distributed optimally so it's not smashing into my chest every time i take a step, i'd say i'm still a dog to the fat guy if he can make it around the track at a weak jog. eighty pounds is a lot to carry.

I actually feel like people are overestimating fat guy. at 160 he definitely should've been favored a lot, probably like 10:1, but with 80 pounds he's probably close to even. I think a reasonably strong/in shape person would probably be maybe 3:1 even with the 160 on their back, so long as they found a good way to attach it so it wasn't swinging into his legs and stuff.

go do squats at the gym and put 135 on your back. i might be talking to the wrong audience here, but if you're not scrawny, it will feel pretty light, especially if you do squats for a few weeks. I could most definitely run with 135 on my back at a reasonable pace for 1/4 mile, but i'm not really familiar with how fast a 330 pound dude is capable of going.

oh and as said above, definitely have to attach the weight right otherwise he's got no shot. it has to be on his back/shoulders otherwise he has no chance whatsoever.

I think fat guy wins about 19/20 with the new 80 pound handicap. You should provide pics of skinny guy and fat guy so we can make a more informed judgement.

In the military folks go on timed marches with up to 60+ #s in a large ruck, and plenty of people can shuffle/jog/speed walk pretty long distances so I think this is getting close.

no you couldn't. Doing a squat with 135 is worlds away from doing a squat with 180 which is worlds away from actually running with eithier of those 2 on your back.

Yeah, after you squat 135, start walking with it. Actually don't do this because you'll almost certainly **** your back up, but think about it.

The amount of pounds it would take for it to be even money? I'd say like 30.

Are you people f****** kidding me? Have you ever given your little cousin a piggy back ride? I could certainly carry her for 400 yards faster than a fat guy. I would die if I had to carry someone who weighed ~160 like myself, but 160 ---> 80 is a HUGE difference.

135lbs on a barbell that is perfectly balanced on the centre of your back is worlds away from 135lbs of shifting, unbalanced dead weight.
