Generational trends for one. Demographic variance other than age in specific age blocks for another. Current political hot issues and how they are generally affecting/perceived by the age groups in question for a third.

People changing their party affiliation and how/why as they get older is an interesting question, but the assumption is flawed here.

I don't think there are very many illegal manufacturers. So somewhere down the line, a legal possessor of a gun transferred ownership to an illegal one by either carelessness or apathy.

BTW, I can't tell if there was so much talk about gun ownership because of what I said or what, but I wasn't defending the gun picture or gun ownership. I just wanted to point out the flaw in logic the original poster had.

Regarding the dems are young and repubs are old: I haven't done research, but it makes sense to vote for the party that pitches itself as the party for the poor and unemployed when you are young and more likely to be poor. Then vote for the party that pitches itself as the party for economic growth when you are old and are more likely to have money and a good job.

Exactly. I don't think I'd ever become a republican because they're the Jesus worshipping anti-science party, but I used to be very left wing as a youth, and have shifted considerably towards the center in my 30's. Many extreme left wingers seem a little silly to me now, and they never did before.

A lot of studies show it's more about when you strongly identify politically. Once that happens few people ever switch sides later in life.
