Who is Prince Albert?
08-28-2020 , 03:03 PM
He's that guy stuck in a can.

This thread has taken a weird turn.

One time I was walking and this big muscle bound dude literally ALMOST walks right into me and it's totally his fault. Since as everyone itt knows I'm a pretty chill guy I say "sorry" to be polite.

He turns to me, stops, and says curtly, "You better be!" mean af.

I'm sorry for making anyone uncomfortable, because, I'm a pretty chill guy, I think.
08-28-2020 , 03:37 PM
We should be more comfortable with being uncomfortable.
08-28-2020 , 04:39 PM
That's comforting.

For what amount of money would you cut off one of your own fingers?

Would you assign a different value to each digit? How much more/less would it take to cut off your thumb versus your pinky?

For the sake of argument, we'll assume you have a sterile environment and may use an implement of your choice. No anesthetic.

What the jish?

jfish NO!

Let's put some money and digits on the table, boys!

reminds me of the 90s when i was living in Eugene for college. lived two blocks away from a bar called Good Times, which had free pool during certain happy hours. i was by no means a sharp but i could hold my own back then.

one of my long standing rivals was a really nice guy, short and probably in his 50s. i learned while chatting with him for many rounds he spent 30 years pulling green chain lumber at a plywood mill in Springfield. if i had to guess he had a sum total of six fingers remaining if you were to add up all of the one- and two-joint missing fingers and put the rest together. his left hand bridge was between his index and middle finger, which were both missing above the first knuckle.

pulling green chain

What am I missing? How exactly do you lose fingers doing that?

I have a sense you've told this story about the green chain thing here before.

what a memory. inspired me to do an all thread search and came up with this from 2017:

while passing a piece of wood through a dado blade he absentmindedly used his hand as a push stick and cut a neat 1/2" groove through the middle of his palm. it was the closest i've ever been to a crime scene.

while living in eugene i met several veterans of the lumber industry in local bars. one of the best pool players at Good Times pulled wood off the green chain at a plywood mill for decades. he had a total of 7 fingers on both hands when you added up the entirely lost digits with the partially lost digits. that stuff is no joke. the video below is modern, you can imagine what it was like 20 or 30 years ago when worker safety wasn't the main concern.

i don't even remember posting it, but do remember watching the video.

I like it. I've thought about this hypothetical many times over the years.

Number changes. Not sure what its now. I think pinkie fetches the lowest return.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'd take 5-10k for my pinky. Thumb is a really tough one.

You realize that's only asking 50-100 OOTers to each kick in $100, right?
08-28-2020 , 07:22 PM
If the opening offer for a digit is lower than $1 mil then I'm assuming it's not a serious discussion.

Nobody is paying a million for a pinky, bro.

So you're saying we should pool our money and...

I know I've told this story before but my friend jumped off a boat and got his pinky ripped off by a part of the boat. This was about 10 years ago.

He walked away with a little over 1M. He said he would absolutely do it all over again.

He also said that since he has spun that 1M up quite a bit, there's no number he would take for his other pinky.

Pinkies must be like kidneys. You can give one away and feel good about doing it, but you don't want to do it twice. Who knew?

Meat cleaver, 500k, a butcher block, and I'd have a serious discussion about my left pinkie.

I could stand the permanent loss of a digit much more easily than the pain of the ordeal of doing it myself with no anesthesia.

I would entertain the prospect of the loss for $1 million or more for a pinky--much more for thumb or index finger. The DIY process would probably require more than 10X that.

I think a good heavy meat cleaver laying next to a stack of c notes would solve that problem. Once the cash is had you can start chugging vodka and send somebody out for some oxy.

A cleaver would be so swift it would be over before you knew it. Trying to do it Aron Ralston style w/ a pocket knife would be tough.
