I don't think people realize how fast a 4 year old who is knee high can bolt away from you without you realizing it. One second you are both gazing at the gorilla's in their exhibit, and maybe you reach into your bag for your camera to take a pic, and then you look down and boom. Little Johnny is now part of the exhibit. Didn't realize the majority of my FB friends were perfect parents and all have leashes on their kids. The bigger problem is why can a 4 year old breach the gorilla exhibit.

So many people are butthurt they didn't get to see a video of the gorilla killing a kid. That's the real reason behind their faux outrage. Kind of weird imo.

So no kids huh?

Generally comments like this just demonstrate you have no clue what you're talking about.

The wild animal park in San Diego has no fences. They just have ditches basically. The ditches are 100% designed to keep the animals out, not people from getting in. A lot of zoos are going to the same thing.

I've been 50 feet from a roaring male lion looking him right in the eye and I couldn't even see the ditch between us - they hide it that well. It's pretty cool. I'd hate to lose that just because of an endangered toddler once a decade.

The pit bulls scare you, the roaring lions not so much.

If you can design a ditch to keep animals in, it should (and I know this is kinda out there, but work with me here) be possible to design one that would stymie a 4 year old.

A 4 year old can't write the words on their activity form in preschool but they can get a gorilla killed within an hour of coming in contact with one.

I think we need to start giving 4 year olds more credit itt

Generally the ditches are shaped like this:

As you can see - very hard for the lion to get out, not so hard for a kid to fall into.

Having been to many zoos, including San Diego, with my children when they were 4 and thereabouts, I can say it's never *that* easy for them to fall in.

But, a 4 yo who is a good climber could definitely get over a lot of those fences before the ditch exhibits.

The *problem* is whether we should redesign all our zoos for one endangered toddler once a decade. I vote no.

I don't think it's "all" of them

so like 8 billion people visit zoos. One falls in and we need to change everything.

What is this? Politics?

The lion can easily clear that 6' gap.

Gap not drawn to scale. I drew the gap first before the lion - big mistake.

What's the proper number of gorillas we should be shooting per year IYO?

In case it's not clear, I agree with you essentially. If we aren't shooting a gorilla every once in a while we've probably over engineered the enclosure.

Regardless, that position doesn't exclude one from also thinking the zoo could be liable for damages.

I for one, demand that we stop bringing gorillas into this country until we can be sure that they pose no threat. I further demand that all gorillas already present must register themselves with the government.

Won't somebody please think if the children!

This is classic bait for hyper-cynical internet posts. It is sad that the gorilla had to die, especially when it's not even clear he would have harmed the child. **** happens though. It seems to me the zoo administrators made the only choice they could. Unless there are details I'm unaware of, charging the parents with something doesn't seem logical either.

At least until we can figure out what's going on.
