I like to imagine these outraged internet people chomping on a burger as they type out their anger at innocent animals being killed

If you have genetics like mine these situations don't happen and parenting is easy.

Kids these days, this is the problem with parents

When I was young, if I ever so much as looked at a gorilla my parents would lock me in a dungeon for months on end while gradually peeling the skin from my fingers, and using hot wax to re-seal the areas peeled to ensure that I didn't bleed out.

I never did anything wrong ever and never was more than half a metre away from them in any public place ever and have been perfect every single day my entire life

I love animals too but why is this even being discussed?

If the gorilla were to attack/kill the kid he would have been shot anyway. Were they really supposed to just wait and hope the gorilla didn't get aggressive? ****ty situation and it sucks an animal was killed over it but I don't see any other option.

At least the gorilla is no longer being held captive, to be gawked at by stupid ****ing humans; but that's a whole other debate.

And why don't they have tranquilizer darts that are instantly (or close to it) effective yet?

Sounds like you would **** your pants visiting this place. Yes, fully grown tigers walk right past you with no safety measures. They are merely 'tame' and escorted by a monk. Yes, I've been there and was actually a bit shocked it was allowed.

How is it even a question if the kid's parents are ****ty?

Remove the gorilla from the scenario completely they still let the kid drop down 15 feet. If that isn't awful parenting I don't know what is.

Because they are fired into a muscle, not directly into the blood stream. It takes time for the medication to absorb into the blood in sufficient quantity to have the desired effect.

How would you know? How many parents do you know well enough that you can confidently assess whether they are good parents or not? And of those how many on each side have said "being a parent is hard"?

Or is this just some confirmation bias thing you tell yourself?

Like I said I'm certainly not saying you need to be a parent to understand. You can certainly feel free to try to understand without being a parent. The presumably childless in this thread don't seem to be doing a great job of exemplifying that but I don't doubt they are capable. And I have no idea if I'm a good parent or not. I guess in 15 years or so I'll see what my outcomes look like and try to figure it out. Will still be hard to tell if I just got lucky though.

I will say that those who jump to criticize parents rarely seem to have any real concrete suggestions. Mostly just kind of mindless platitudes. I'm very worried about being a bad parent, and am happy to take advice but "be better" and "watch them more" and "raise them right" are surprisingly difficult to put into actio .

I will definitely try taking my kids to and then removing them from a grocery store in the near future though can't argue with that track record.

How effective was the "discipline" of your mom raining down actual punches to the heads of you and your siblings if you have 4 examples on the ready from your childhood of different places that you routinely misbehaved in?

Guessing she probably just had a bad temper and would abuse her kids when she was having a bad day.

Pretty effective, and she abused us on her good days too. TV was lame back then.

Never recall acting up or throwing a fit in a public place, we knew what would happen if we did. Rampaged in a friends house one time while she was visiting in another room and she took me to the car and wailed on me. We pretty much waited until we were out of her sight before breaking loose.

Mostly a Tom Sawyer'esque existence, go play in the woods all day (~10 yrs old) and not come back until dark. That way we didn't incur her wrath.

Way late but some of the outrage over this is silly. The zoo didn't casually decide to put down a great ape because they're some trigger-happy George Zimmerman types, and the auto-judging of the parents based on a kid getting out of sight for a second is even dumber, because it's happened to everyone with kids in a public place at some point. The vast majority of the time all works out fine and it's nothing but a scare, but since that wasn't the case here let's be purely results-oriented and immediately assume the kids' parents are ****bags.

That doesn't preclude the possibility that the parents are negligent ****bags of course, but some folks drew that conclusion waaaaay too fast. Other things equal, the types of parents who bring their kids to the zoo are probably more likely to be decent folks than the lonely slobs taking issue.
