S4 to s7 is a huge upgrade. Usually 1 generation upgrade is not worth it. 2 is very noticeable 3 is definitely a game changer. Now is it worth it for you. Only you can answer.
If you are fine with phone keep it until you break it or it start annoying you.

LOL NEXT PROGRAM

eat a dick AT&T and spit it in Verizon's face with those BS plans.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/232019464665?rmvSB=true S7 for $430, which is 5 times $83. Is the $83/month for five months? No? 24? Yes? lol.

If you want a better phone, go for it. I went from a 2 gen old G3 to a 0 gen old 6p and the only things I notice are the fingerprint sensor (GAME CHANGER) and usb-c (MEDIUM GAME CHANGER) and the camera is worse unless you're shooting something other than yourself flexing hard enough to move the earth

Yea generally phones now are in the ballpark of $30/month for 2 years for like an $800 phone or so, which lines up with Shuffle's claimed boost in price. I think these prices are kind of ridiculous since that's what laptops should cost, and will only be buying ~$400 phones from here on out after how much I loved my $400 Nexus 6P.

KP,

It's not $83/month for 24mo. It's ($83-$55)*24mo for the new phone. So yes, still $672, but no, not $1992. The first $55 is his base contract where he doesn't have to pay for a phone. Now, your point still holds, somewhat obviously. The biggest reason to buy one of those phones on one of those plans is if you simply have to have the new phone close to release date, when sub-retail is not really an option. There are other reasons too, but that's the big one.

Yup. I don't follow iPhone too closely anymore but I recall they never get discounted so it's pretty good but if you're doing this on Androids, especially in Q3 of 2016 you are burning money.

Huge fan of the fingerprint id on the nexus 5x.

That's a very old phone.

Geekbench scores for comparison:

Single threaded: S4: ~650 / S7: 2108
Multi threaded: S4: ~2000 / S7: 6400

You're looking at a phone > 3x faster now. That's a huge leap.

If you don't want to spend a lot even an S6 is still a lot faster than what you have, by about double.

I'm sure there is as far as speed and operating system, but if you aren't having any problems with your existing phone,I'd have no urge to upgrade, unless it's cheap, like dirt cheap.
I get a new phone regularly, but it's always a older model phone, cause after the first year, the price drops considerably, and it usually after wearing out the phone to some extent.
I'm not much on getting the latest and greatest.

Yea agreed ^^^ don't get a new phone if you don't want a new phone. Simple as that.

I get a new phone almost every year because I'm a child who likes toys, but not reaaaally for any functional reason.

I'm a really frugal person, but I actually disagree with this advice in this case for a few reasons:

1. Your smartphone is one of your MOST used devices.
2. Battery capacity on phones drop quite a bit over the years (though with android at least you can replace usually)
3. Unlike desktop CPU's that only improve by like 5% per year in speed, mobile devices are improving in speed by 50-80% per year
4. #3 normally wouldn't be a big deal for simple apps, but I've found that operating systems are getting more and more cpu intensive.

I think we're at a point now where a phone from 2015/2016 could last quite a long time given their current cpu power, but a phone from 2013 is definitely showing its age at this point.

You're making a case for why you should want a new phone, not why you should get a new one regardless.

I'm also not sure I agree, for people who don't use many apps and just call/text, an s3 and definitely s4 is probably plenty fine.

I went way over budget for my new phone and bought a galaxy s7 with the VR gear. I regret nothing, they are awesome toys. Though if you're considering buying a VR gear you should probably try it first because some people are put off by the bad image quality.

I sent my HTC 10 to HTC who sent it to a third party for repair. It was water damage. They gave me a quote of 577$ to repair the phone. Feels like I'm getting ripped off, the phone is 800$ to buy.

Sell it on ebay... People pay stupid amounts for busted iphones all the time there.

I did a search on eBay and never really found anything. If I can't get it repaired for cheaper I'll cheap keep the phone and use it for spare parts for my 10.

For most people who only check email, text, talk, do a little web surfing s4 is still great and it has a better footprint, microsd and removable battery. No brainer to keep the s4. S4 in not a slow phone for most common uses.

Most people dont need a galaxy SX in the first place, a simple moto G do the job efficiently but at some point he decided he was ready to pay 800$ for a phone(or way more depending on his contract)
Saying keeping or changing is a no brainer is ignorant. Only him can know if getting a brand new premium phone is worth 28$/month for him.

btw you get
- android 7 within 6 months when you must be stuck on android 5.0 with S4
- a glass and aluminum body over plastic
- little bit bigger and heavier phone
- fingerprint scanner
- water and dust resistant
- slightly bigger screen with better resolution
- the best camera phone on the market(maybe not anymore since i checked but way better than S4)
- way better front camera for facetime
- 4Go of ram instead of 2 that start to sux a bit and will most likely be a problem soon
- both have micro sd
- S7 got a bigger battery(not sure if it give positive results over S4 with other changes)
- a way better CPU for a smoother experience and possibly less battery usage for basic stuff.

If you dont care about specs and up to date OS, buying a 100-200$ unlocked phone every couple of year make much more sense than forking 400-1000$ in a high end phone.
And if you want a very good phone you have a ton of pretty decent option in the 400-500$ range no need to buy a galaxy S for that, but some people like apple or samsung and can choose whatever they want.

I loved my S4. But the quick draining battery and home button lag was too much of an inconvenience after a while. 2015+ phones are significantly faster and less laggy.

Anyone switched to Fi recently that already had a 5x? Wife and I got 5x's back in feb but kept using straightalk. Looking at switching to Fi now and it sounds like if i do this, they will credit me the difference between what i paid for our phones($300) and what they are charging for them with Fi service($200)? Seems like a no brainer, right? Straigh talk has been fine for us for 2+ years now, but i've been hearing really good things about Fi.

Yea, just make sure the tmo/sprint combo is decent in your area (not sure what towers straight talk uses)
